the tour story:
Ahhh, the Rochester War Memorial Coliseum. What memories I have of that venue. Great shows, sweaty, cramped floor space with an old fashioned concourse just serving the typical kanteen offerings- hot dogs, pop corn and beer. This would be my fourth Dead show in this venue. We met up with several Syracuse friends as we drove up from Hampton to meet our New York crew. Eddie Wahba drove over from Cleveland, Sean and Gary caught up with us after going home to Mclean on the way North. I remember the tapers section being as large as I had ever seen it; all sprawled out in the middle of the GA floor with the front set of mics about 30-35 feet from the stage and the rear ones probably about 80 feet from stage. We had three sets of mics going and there were so many tapers, I'd guess at least 50 mic stands at this show.
The first set was a nice deliberate sequence of tunes. The Shakedown Street opener thundered along to elevate the old building and the audience knew we were in for a classic session of Grateful Dead. Peggy-O had pretty keyboard counterpoints with Jerry's vocal getting a bit of added reverb from Healy's desk to counteract the strain in Jerry's voice. Cowboy tunes led into a newly brought into heavy rotation Duprees Diamond Blues, which to my ears, is one damn fine rendition. A fine Cassidy leads into an extended West LA Fadeaway.
A second set Hell in a Bucket opener was a tad unusual as even a year after debuting the tune they had yet to settle on the slot for this tune. The by now Brent staple, Far from Me, was played after Ship of Fools which Garcia forgot lyrics and his voice was so raspy it sounded like razor blades. A sweet jam develops after He's Gone with Brent & Bobby leading it. The Other One had the Phil bombs flying with a very spirited rendition. Garcia got bold and slipped into a Stella Blue which comes off pretty good even with the gravelly vocals. They wrapped it up with a standard Around & Around, Johnny B Goode and Day Job encore; an all around excellent show.
