The tour story:
It is quite a drive from Clarkston MI to Kansas City MO, thankfully they gave us a day between to do it. Tom had printed out these small oval Touch of Gray stickers, and we plastered all the rest areas from Michigan to Missouri with them. Even at one point throwing about 200 of them out the window, as we were rolling down the road, to these girls we had been talking with at a rest area. At this point in the tour you get to recognzing the others who had tour booklets or that you saw in every parking lot or inside the venue. When the travel distance is so far, you start seeing the same cars, VW buses, school buses, hearses and really know the meaning of the sticker, "Who Are the Grateful Dead and Why Do They Keep Following Me?".
This show was fun which reflected the quality of the venue and the crowd being so appreciative to see the band in such a small place. The Starlight Theatre was just one piece of this huge park complex similar to the OKC site where there is a zoo and also a botanic garden at the Kansas City park. From the outside the venue had a red brick facade, with red brick ticket booths and gates. Inside the brick structure was painted like a Shakespearean theater, with the facade being semi-circular "windows" looking like box seats. The actual seats in 1984 were open air, there was no roof over the pavilion seating; if I recall they did put a roof over the pavilion some years later. Gorgeous sound and great sight lines add to the experience at Starlight.
The set lists were typical of this summer 1984 tour, but certainly fleshed out as the tour was coming to a close and the boys had played 11-12 shows already. Out of the gate they romped through 'Alabama Getaway' > 'Promised Land' with heavy Brent Hammond B3 and Jerry solos in each selection. Jerry's vocals on Candyman and Loser are sweet for this late in the tour. All in all, a nice, no surprises, but enjoyable first set.
The second set opener sequence of Scarlet > Touch > Fire was just another playful combination like they had been throwing out all tour. Deadbase says this combination was only played twice. The jamming in the segue between is almost as if they did not have this combination pre-conceived. Touch of Gray was by this time getting settled into the setlists as either an opener or an encore, so this placement certainly was unique, although they ultimately played a few 'Scarlet >Touch' combinations. The Fire on the Mountain featured tortured vocals from Jerry with Brent's counterpoints to Jerry's vocals and solos; Bobby joined in offering great dissonant chords bouncing back off of Brent. An odd space followed 'Fire' as Jerry left stage but Phil, Bobby and Brent stayed to do this slow, no rhythm, funky jam leading to Brent saying he'll let everyone know 'I Don't Need Love'. The rest of the set was standard fare, featuring top notch playing. After Not Fade Away the crowd was not chanting before the encore but was simply clapping the Rhythm- "Clap-Clap-Clap..Clap-Clap".
