The tour story:
The final night of this run definitely had a more Saturday vibe, as in tickets were harder to come by in the lot, and traffic took longer to get parked. That kept us from getting in line as early as we needed and for this day we were even farther behind the OTS than on Thursday. After we found decent spots for both mics and the rest of the crew we waited for the 2 PM start. But the Dead messed with the town and crowd on this day. They came out late, Bobby spoke for a few minutes, then he started playing "the Frozen Logger", a tune they played in the early 1970's. Most of the crowd had no idea what it was, people kept asking me and I knew the title from those old tapes we got from Dave Prescott. Bobby stopped and went offstage. After a few minutes' breather, the band came onstage with Mickey and Phil playing kazoos while others (crew members?) played slidewhistles for an odd version of Star Spangled Banner. Jerry and Brent looked on with bemusement as they tuned up.
They may have been dragging out the show, waiting out some weather, or simply having a grand time, but the band was certainly not in a rush this day. After the hijinks, they played a short, but typically timed for the era, first set starting with the "Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo" and loping through a few cowboy tunes on their way to an unusually positioned set closer "One More Saturday Night". After the lyric: "Turn on Channel 6, the President Comes on the news", Weir says "Come on Ronnie, its' Saturday Night!" exhorting then President Reagan to put on his dancin' shoes!
The band took a long set break and came back out "late" opening with a "Shakedown Street" that had some excellent Phil bass leads and overall strong energy. A very well played Crazy Fingers had the heads all smiles. They worked their way through Sampson > "Uncle John's Band" and of course, Bobby decided not to complete the "Playin' in the Band". The band was certainly playful and engaging on this final night of the run. Red Rocks is my favorite venue for live music in the United States and we were all lucky to have had tickets to attend these shows. I feel, thinking and listening back (36 years later), that the band also enjoyed that venue and had fun up there on the mountain looking up at the audience dancing between those glorious Red slabs of rock jutting to the sky.
