the tour story:
Mike had been in town for a couple of days when we arrived via plane and headed for San Francisco where we stayed. The shows were to be at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. I supposed BGP realized by putting the show in the Arena they would have more people inside than outside the venue. Howard Terry met us at the airport and played the host by taking us to Berkeley for food and to get supplies for the short stay. This New Years Eve run was only two shows rather than a 4 show run they had done in previous years.
This show was well played and obviously a warm up for the band to get in the mindset to play on national TV and radio the following night. The nine song first set sandwiched a lot of sweet playing between "Gimme Gimme Some Lovin'" and "Don't Ease Me In". The "Brother Esau" and the Stagger Lee all have a nice vocal effort with Bob and Jerry trading off tunes all set. The "Little Red Rooster" featured Jerry and Brent sailing along under Bob's slide leads. A loping "Tennessee Jed" into a beautiful "Looks Like Rain" led into the closer and when the lights went up smiles were all around the crowd.
For the second set the band offered up a breakout cover tune with Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn" sounding nothing like the Manfred Mann version from the 1960's. This led straight into a popping "Samson & Delilah" and wound through "He's Gone" and a short "I Need a Miracle" dropping into a mesmerizing "Crazy Fingers". Jerry gets lost during the opening verse but recovers and fashions the tune into a trippy vocal harmony with Bob and Brent then the keyboard and guitar solo's melt down into drums and space. The closing stanza was short, the show ending before midnight, obviously allowing the band and fans time to go home and renew batteries for the following night's extravaganza.
