01/26/2004 | tonto | if you want the encore, you should be the GDM release "view from the vault" ; isn't this SBD off limits?
01/26/2004 | As far as what GDM has stated recently, yes - officially released SBDs should not be traded, although it is kind of a grey zone.
01/26/2004 | Mark Goldey | There's nothing grey about it. Official releases cannot be copied. Other sources of shows that have been officially released can be traded. It doesn't matter whether it's a soundboard or an audience or in braile, so long as it's not a copy of the official release.

nothing grey about it -- per gdp, ALL soundboards of officially released shows are NOT to be traded -- see http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/gdp.txt From: GDP Intellectual Property Division To: "Kirby Bell" Subject: Re: GD tape trading policy Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 11:51:39 -0800 As I just wrote to someone else who just submitted the same question: No, soundboards are not okay to trade after the show has been officially released. Technically, audience taping was the only thing the band ever authorized, not soundboards. Audience tapes of the same show are okay to trade. Thanks for asking, Jan |

To clarify the trading policy, here is something pulled from the etree BT site, "The following reiterates the long standing policy we have used at etree. I'm not sure where the other policy change came from, but this is the one that all of us at "The Music Never Stopped Project" have always and will continue to follow. So, look for all of the great old soundboards that are available to be posted on the whole year projects. Here is the exact letter from Jan at GDP.... 'This question seems to be coming up a lot. As I told someone else recently: Tapers are free to trade their old sound boards of shows, so long as they don't trade the re-mastered versions that we put out. Thanks for checking, Jan' " |

01/27/2004 | Erin | Darrin, Paul - That's quite a discrepancy. So similar, yet worlds apart. Is there a verifiable source for the GD policy?

The most recent clarification of the policy is the one listed by Paul, which was just received this week from Jan. While this seems to be a direct contradiction to the December email on the SBD trading policy, since it is the most recent communication, it should be taken as the current policy of the band (it seems as though the thiking at GDP has changed in the time from December to January). This still doesn't answer the question of why someone would want a copy of a show with three drop outs, four cuts, an unknown number of cassette generations, and that is missing the encore when they can just go buy a purely digital, remastered, pristine, and complete copy with that great filler from Louisville for a mere $30, but, whatever, to each his own. If people really want this, it is OK to circulate. |
