FRONT ROW VIDEO (KGO TV) San Francisco "Haight Ashbury Revisited" 1983 Hosts: Tom Parker, Cheryl Jennings A look back at The Haight Ashbury. Well done, with lots of old footage. The history is explored with a nostalgic feel. Some interesting perspective is shared by folks who lived through it. Plenty of Grateful Dead in this...Garcia, Mickey, Bill Graham all have things to say. It's amusing that when the subject of LSD comes up, the footage used is from Frost Ampitheater in the 80's. This is rough watch... but well worth it!

"The Sounds of San Francisco" 1982 I don't know where or when this aired exactly, but it comes from the same tape. This segment of the program is pure Grateful Dead. Great clips of interviews, sprinkled in with familiar stock news film make this an intersting one. There are some nice crowd shots of the Oakland Auditorium shows, and an interview in front of the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. Again, if you can handle the poor video quality - you'll love this!

The only changes made to the songs are getting them all to one volume level and fades. I did the best I could with fades, but some are rather abrupt due to the fact that one song goes right into the next. Overall I think it turned out good. You might consider burning this in TAO instead of DAO - I added 1 second of silence at the beginning and end of each song to separate them, but TAO is still the way to go IMHO. My reasoning for deciding which versions to include is listed below: Day Tripper GD 06-25-85 Suggested by David Gans Come Together Dead 07-07-03 Suggested by a fellow CDead member. He said that he believed that Joan's super hot performance got this one going. Eleanor Rigby Jam JGB 02-12-80 One of very few. All are ragged. Chose this one as one of best. The two GD versions really sucked Get Back PLQ 10-16-00 Not played much, GD version very poor Why Don't We Do It In The Road GD 04-07-85 Well, it IS a Beatles song...less lame than the others (I was almost tempted to leave it off entirely) Hey Jude GD 03-22-90 *Complete version; Jude>Reprise patched together, dropping "Dear Mr. Fantasy" entirelly; There is a slight "hitch" between Jude and the Reprise but I left it as is to keep as much music as possible without including "Fantasy." I had originally thought of using the 3/1/69 version, but David Gans suggested this one as the better choice. Even though the '69 one has Pigpen, this one is better. Strawberry Fields Forever PLQ 02-08-02 Pretty hot version, although a bit hollow; it also features some interesting hints to Eleanor Rigby. Rain GD 10-09-94 I perused The Compendium Volume III and found this to be one of the better versions, which, upon hearing it, it is. DISC II Revolution GD 07-02-85 I listened to all of the versions, and this one shone above the rest. I could have sworn that there was a really good one from '90, but, when I listened, well, I guess I was mistaken. She Said Dead 07-07-03 Joan smokes on this puppy! Dear Prudence Reconstruction 7-8-79 Suggested here as a good version in lieu of the later JGB versions - it has pretty much what he played with the JGB, with horns, and back when he was healthy. All Too Much GD 03-26-95 Someone here suggested this one. I Want To Tell You JGB 03-08-87 *1 of 2 JGB times played; The '76 version is ragged which is a shame as Donna and Keith were part of the JGB back then. I to go with a JGB version instead of the GD versions as Jerry was in much better health. Also, the JGB allowed him to stretch out in a different direction. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds GD 03-17-95 Best version according to The Compendium Volume III. I Am The Walrus PLQ 09-01-02 - personal favorite, I attended and we believed that PLQ was not going to tour anymore.... While My Guitar Gently Weeps PLQ 11-30-01 Bitter sweet to hear this one as it was the day after George died. It was only played once; I wish they had included this in their repertoire, or at least pulled it out every so often as a surprise. Warren does this one "just exactly perfect."

Grateful Dead Dead To The Core Project Noteworthy Other Ones (A Collection) This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Cryptical Envelopment and The Other One by the Grateful Dead. The song was written by Jerry, Bob, and Billy. Originally the song was a suite called "That's It For The Other One", consisting of three parts: Cryptical Envelopment, Quodlibit For Tenderfeet, and The Faster We Go The Rounder We Get. It is quite common to call combinations of the last two parts "The Other One". In the early years these songs were inseperable; The Other One started showing up on its own in 1971, and shortly thereafter (with the exception of a few shows in 1985) Cryptical was gone. The collection is closely based on a list put together by Eric Wybenga and published in his book _Dead To The Core: An Almanac of the Grateful Dead_. Eric picked versions of The Other One from throughout the band's career. When he picked a version that was commercially released, I used an AUD instead of a SBD if one was available to me, or I selected a similar show if there was no AUD. Eric had an unusually high hit-rate for this collection. I don't know if that means he just like popular Other One's, or that great Other One's are quite likely to be commercially released? Be that as it may, I had to make more substitutions than usual here. The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs included in the track. If The Other One is part of a larger jam, I included the other songs, especially when they were songs that commonly showed up next to The Other One. Since The Other One was associated with Drums and filled with Space from the get-go, even before there were ritualized Drums/Space's, I have been more willing than usual to include Drums and Spaces that flowed into and out of parts of The Other One in an organic/interesting way. To create these, I decoded to wav's with flac or shntool as appropriate to the source, joined the wav's with shntool, edited them (in the edges and fades way) with Wavelab, fixed the bad headers Wavelab creates with shntool strip, and then compressed things with flac. I used flac v1.2.1, shorten v3.6.0, shntool v3.0.2, ane Wavelab V6. First shared via bitTorrent at bt.eTree.org, Febuary 2009, by SteveSw.

I burned these tracks with no gaps between them, so each segment almost bleeds into the next, but you can do it however you want. Since the music is not continuous, there is no reason it must be done without gaps. Some of the tracks are just a couple of minutes; others are much longer. Total time without the spaces is 79:16. This disk was inspired by a need for some genuinely low-key music, without words, simply to have on while I worked, napped, and so forth. I don't recommend it for late-night drives on empty interstates, but that's just me. Seeded by Peter Braverman, December 2004.
