Notes:
The 8th song, previously notated as "unknown instrumental" on Deadlists, is a cover of Freddy King's "Heads Up." The 9th tune, previously listed as "The Same Thing (instrumental)," is definitely NOT that song. Although it is a
standard blues and sounds similar at the beginning, closer listening makes it pretty obvious that it is an entirely different song, title unknown. The Viola Lee Blues on this expanded version is a different version than on the
previous three song version of Pico Acid Test. This is an ongoing mystery, although it should be said that both versions are worth having.

One week before the law that made LSD illegal in California was to take effect; Ken Kesey snuck back from his hideout in Mexico to attend the San Francisco State College Acid Test. Word on the street was that Kesey had made a deal. He didn’t! The set-up was with Kesey, Jerry, Mt. Girl etc. off in a different hidden room secretly microphoned and wired so people could hear him and he could hear them and interact with the crowd in the auditorium. This didn’t happen until around 4am. All of this was being broadcast by the local radio station that also recorded it with a professional reel-to-reel tape recorder. Ed Perlstein recently found this gem preserved in the Bay Area Music Archives, and sent a digitally re-mastered (but unaltered) DAT. Next generation Prankster Simon Babbs has enhanced, the sound, divided it into tracks, and created CD through Intrepid Trips, he burns these CDs individually for you. Versions of this Acid Test have emerged through the years from amateur recordings of the broadcast, but this CD with its pristine recording from the location are a window into time! With Ken Kesey on guitar and vocals, Dale Kesey on violin, Hugh Romney (Wavy Gravy) and Mountain Girl (Carolyn Garcia) backup and side-pranks, Jerry Garcia on Organ, and Steve Newman was engineering.

According to research by Corry at Lost Live Dead blog, it's likely that the Dead played this show. According to the blog, "Future Sons of Champlin road manager Charlie Kelly saw this show and told me about it in a personal email. He was an Army draftee at the time, and he had a memorable week’s leave, where he celebrated his 21st birthday at the Avalon seeing his High School friends band, The Sons of Champlin. Kelly would join the Sons crew when he returned from the Army in mid-1968. He also recalls seeing the Dead for the first time at this show." A user's Note: tracks 1-8 are reportedly from 2/25/66 Ivar Theater, Los Angeles. I find that exceedingly hard to believe. The material here is much tighter and the recording far better than those from 3/12 or 3/25. I date the above material from May or later.

Background on these LPs:
These 2 LPs were release without explicit permission from the Dead.Producer Robert Cohen (a bit more on Mr. Cohen here: http://www.lumiereprod.com/history.html) got the masters from recordingsmade at the Avalon, adding applause and other sounds where needed to helpthe flow (there is a bit of audio, a small segment with some mostlyinaudible band chatter, which was added to "extend" tracks so theywouldn't end so abruptly. The same segment used in a couple of differentspots, once as a loop that repeats 2-3 times). Some of the songs have cutintros, but are segued with applause anyway. These are pretty muchbootleg quality from today's perspective, and frankly most interest inthese LPs is because of their status as collectibles rather than beingworthwhile musically. But fans of the early days will especially enjoythe lengthy workouts of "Midnight Hour", "The Same Thing" and "GoodMorning Little Schoolgirl".

Footnote: An LP released in 1973, "The History Of The Grateful Dead"(Pride/MGM PRD-0016), compiled the following tracks from the SunflowerLPs: Dancin' In The Street, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, I Know YouRider, In The Midnight Hour, It Hurts Me Too, Lindy and Stealin'. Therewas also an official release on Warners released in 1973 with virtuallythe same title (subtitled "Bear's Choice", as we all know), so the PrideLP couldn't have been very welcome at that time.
