Russ Flanagan sat in on fiddle for parts of this show. Alumni was played by request. Letter to Jimmy Page contained quotes from Trey of "It's alright" before eventually returning to Alumni. Some recordings erroneously note that this show was a double-bill with The Joneses. This show contained the first known version of You Enjoy Myself, although it is possible that the correct debut was on 2/1/85, and the first known performances of Zenzilé's pieces (all with Phish) Tonight, The Pendulum, Babylon is Burning, and Dec 1661. The first set of this show is identical to what is listed for 2/1/85. The setlist for 2/1/85 is possibly incorrect. This show was an African National Congress Benefit featuring Phish and South African dub poet Zenzile. Admission was $4. For set II, Phish accmopanied Zenzile for his African rhythmic chants and rap. It’s worth noting that this show corresponds to the setlist of 2/1/85 Doolin’s and may indeed be the correct date of that show (meaning there was no 2/1/85 Doolin’s show or at least that this set I setlist was mis-attributed to that gig). If that is true, then this is the 1st known public performance of You Enjoy Myself. This show also marked the 1st known performances of Zenzile’s pieces – all performed with Phish – Tonight, The Pendulum, Babylon Is Burning and Dec 1661. Russ Flanagan sat in on fiddle for parts of this show.

Phish and The Joneses switched off for 45-minute sets; the two bands performed the encore together. The Pendulum, which was a recital of revolutionary poetry, featured guest Zenzilé Madikinea. This gig contained the first known versions of AC/DC Bag and Icculus, the first known Phish version of Have Mercy, and the only known Phish performances of Help on the Way, Slipknot and Not Fade Away. McGrupp was spoken in a Dylan-esque fashion, in keeping with Trey’s jokes about Phish being the “Dylan Band.” This show, known as Hunt’s Festival Of Fools, was presented by the Moodsters. Admission was $2. The Joneses also played, switching off sets so the lineup went Phish, The Joneses, Phish, The Joneses. Pendulum featured Zenzile on vocals. This show yielded the 1st known performances of AC/DC Bag, Have Mercy (The Mighty Diamonds cover) and Icculus and the 1st and only known performances of Help On The Way and Slipknot! (Grateful Dead covers) as well as Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly cover). After Dave’s Energy Guide, Trey announced they were “The Bob Dylan Band”. McGrupp was narrated rather than sung. Alumni Blues > Letter To Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues included special guest Jim Tasse from The Joneses. The Encore, Not Fade Away, integrated members of The Joneses in a “Monsters Of Guitar Jam” featuring all the Joneses guitarists (Jim Tasse, Tim “TJ” Johnston and John Carlin) plus Mark Jensen on percussion.

[1] First known Phish performance; approximately one minute long. This show was an Earth Day concert at UVM and took place outside the Bailey Howe Library on the Green. This performance previously circulated with the dates April 15 and April 29, 1986. Trey introduced the band as the “Bob Dylan Band” before they began a jam that led into a short All Blues (the first known Phish performance; it was only about a minute long). Dog Log was dedicated to all of the dogs that were running around, including Marley the Wonder Dog (Trey's dog). Possum included a Help on the Way tease. This show was an Earth Day Concert at UVM. The setlist is exactly the same as 4/25/86 so one date (or at least one setlist) is incorrect – it’s presumed that the 4/25 date is correct and 4/15 was the result of mislabeled tapes – see 4/25/86 setlist for details. Before AC/DC Bag, Trey introduced his dad (“all the way from NJ”). This show featured the 1st known performance of All Blues (Miles Davis cover) surrounded by Trey’s banter about The Bob Dylan band. Dog Log was dedicated to all the dogs at the show including “Marley The Wonder Dog”. Anarchy was dedicated to Jim Tasse (Jones) who was leaving to play with The Joneses and Sierra at Slade Hall. Possum included a Help On The Way (Grateful Dead) tease. Anarchy was performed three times at this show – first with the usual “Anarchy” lyric, then as “Jim Tasse” and finally as “Nazi Trustees” and “Killer African Bees”. Camel Walk was introduced as a disco song (imagine the disco ball). Also, according to Garrett Mead, Paul Paul the Banjo Man played two of his tunes solo: Rutabega Boogie and Life Gets Tedious. According to a recording circulated among fans, Trey’s father, Ernie Anastasio opened for Phish on banjo or ukelele with Trey, performing 2 songs – Rutabega Boogie and Life Gets Tedious. This information does not match Garrett’s recollection of Paul Paul The Banjo Man and is considered legend until confirmed. The setlist for this show is unknown. Apparently Phish was the only band that played. The information about the show was based on Del Martin’s tape list, which indicated the band played in the basement. However, Jeff recalled that Phish was the opening band for poet, Allen Ginsberg and that they performed in the main auditorium rather than the basement. Little else is known of these events, but see Allen’s poem “On Cremation of Chögyam Trungpa, Vidyadhara” which was published in 1987 as a tribute to his spiritual guide on the occasion of the burial ceremony conducted by friends and students in Vermont.

This was Phish’s 1st out-of-state show, a high-school graduation celebration for Cambridge School. Mike’s brother David “Digger” Gordon attended Cambridge School (he was a year younger than the celebrants – a junior at this time) and helped get the band the gig. This date may not be exactly correct – it was made up because Mike’s notes don’t indicate a date. Jeff recalled that he was out of the band by this time and on his way to Alaska.

The setlist for Phish’s eighth show at Hunt’s, is unknown. The information about the show came from Del Martin’s tape list and Mike’s notes, which indicate that it was a great gig with a big crowd in attendance.

This was Phish’s last of four shows at Finbar’s. According to Garrett Mead, the gig was sold out with people flowing into the streets. Mike’s notes echo this sentiment, stating “We scorched, great jams, power rock”.

The setlist and exact locationof this show (and proper name of the commune) are unknown. An excerpt from a 1992 interview that was later reprinted in a Phish.net Digest contained Trey’s statement that this was the band’s strangest gig “at this sex commune…run by this old guy named Irving. They were a bunch of old hippies with gardens and kids running around everywhere, and they intermingled their lovemaking. They had a schedule where every night they switched partners. Irving showed up at the gig with a beautiful young woman on each arm. He was the schedule maker. They cooked us an incredible meal, too.”

It appears that there are small tape speed issues throughout the tape. Some songs running slightly slow others slightly fast. This can be chalked up to the process of producing such a recording on 4-track recording technology. This version attempts to correct these speed inaccuracies. This demo is widely known to be from 1986. The cassette shows © 1987 on the dot matrix printed sticker. The cassette itself appears to be a TDK SA60 Super Avilyn Type II Chrome EQ 70µs from the early 80's (1983-84). Other original imperfections left intact. Clicks, pops, hiss and the like were intentionally left as-is to represent the demo tape as it was replicated.
