Purple Haze
B&W, excellent quality Original broadcast: May 21, 1967 - "Bouton Rouge" (French T.V) - Piece 6547 Rebroadcast: August 4, 2007 - Part of "Turn me on" documentary, Arte TV Channel >> Purple Haze live, incomplete but previously unreleased ! (Wild Thing was also recorded but isn't included in this rebroadcast) Notes: This is an upgrade to a previous version, Arte has rebroadcast this program on Saturady and I have record it again but in HQ / 60min mode (previous was done in SP / 120min mode, this explain the size difference). There's an extra snippet that was missing previously due to a slight broadcast trouble / cut. At least, I think my editing is better this time so get it, this is the one to keep ! Enjoy, Share & Preserve Quality !!! Brought to You by BP [August 2007]

Maximum Experience This 4-disc set has nearly every mix and take (recorded prior to 5/67) of the tracks that appeared on "Are You Experienced" (Europe and US) and the first 3 European singles. Vinyl, CD, and tape were used as sources. Ben Franklin numbers are given for each track. Outtake material from Out of the Studio, Out of the Studio 2, Olympic Gold, and Are You Experienced The Sessions was examined, and the best version of each take was used. This means stereo where available. In the case of Purple Haze (4), there are 2 unique mixes, so both were included. This set contains the complete AYE monos released on Track and Reprise. Although the mixes are the same on both releases, you may hear differences in the overall sound. Both of these are hard enough to find in good condition that it seemed better to include both. Which you prefer will be a matter of opinion. The vinyl tracks were manually declicked, and then subjected to a light automated de-crackle. There is still noise in places, but some types of vinyl noise are nearly impossible to remove completely. These tracks still sound pretty good, though. Besides channel averaging on the mono cuts, no other processing was done to the vinyl tracks. The chat intro to Red House (Disc 1 tr 9) was not edited onto tr 10.This was in case people wanted to easily extract the Track mono cuts to generate a Track mono CD. Also, the Track vinyl was used for Remember (1) and Red House (1), even though both of these have appeared on official CD. This was so that the complete Track release would be included. They sound pretty good despite their checkered past :-) Timings given are for the songs, not for the time between CD indexes.

01. The Burning of the Midnight Lamp - Stora Scenen, Grona Lund-Tivoli Garden, Stockholm, Sweeden, September 11, 1967 * This Version of Burning of the Midnight Lamp presented here was recorded during his visit to Stockholm at the end of his second tour of Sweeden, in September 1967. Written on the plane when Jimi flew to the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. The song was very special to him. The performance included on this CD is very fresh, as it was played in public for the first time only a week prior. 02. Foxy Lady - Virus Studio, Bussum, Holland, November 10, 1967 * Noel Redding backing vocals. 03. Catfish Blues - Virus Studio, Bussum, Holland, November 10, 1967 * Noel Redding backing vocals. Two Selections from the Hoepla performance are presented here. First we hear Foxy Lady. Jimi not only played some of his greatest hits on this occasion, but also did an amazing version of Catfish Blues. It's un- fortunate that the footage of this exceptional performance has not survived. 04. Oh, Man, Is This Me or What? - The Playhouse Theatre, London, England, December 15, 1967 * Interview by Tony Hall with Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding. In December 1967 the Experience took some time off to induldge in promotional activities for their newly released Axis: Bold As Love LP. On December 15th they found themselves back at the Playhouse Theatre to record for Top Gear, their second appearance for this program. 05. Purple Haze - Capital Theatre, Ottowa, Ontario, Canada, March 19 1968, 2nd Show * Luckily the second show byt the Experience at the Capital Theatre has survived. Recently a slightly better source was discovered and Purple Haze is included from this newly found tape. 06. Fire - Miami Pop Festival, Gulf Stream Race Track, Hollandale, Florida, USA May 18 1968, 2nd Show. 07. Getting My Heart Back Together - Miami Pop Festival, Gulf Stream Race Track, Hollandale, Florida, USA May 18, 1968, 2nd Show * Up from the skies Jimi arrived by helicopter at the "Underground Pop Festival" held in Hallandale, a small town near Miami, on Saturday May 1, 1968. Released here for the first time ever are two songs for the evening show. Amidst total chaos, while amplifiers were malfunctioning, the Experience struggled hard to give a decent performance. 08. Spanish Castle Magic - Winterland, San Fransico, California, USA, October 11, 1968, 2nd Show * A truly blistering version of Spanish Castle Magic is presented on this CD, and for the first time, in its full glory of nearly ten minutes. 09. All Along the Watchtower * Original backing tracks for "Electric Ladyland" sessions without lead guitar overdubs and other effects. 10. Axis: Bold as Love * Original backing tracks for "Axis: Bold as Love" sessions without lead guitar and phase shifting. 11. Hey Baby (The Land of the New Rising Sun) - K.B. Hallen, Copenhagen, Denmark, Septmeber 3, 1970. 12. Red House - K.B. Hallen, Copenhagen, Denmark, September 3, 1970 * The acoustics of the K.B. Hallen were magnificent and fortunately a splendid audience recording was made on this occasion. Jimi managed to get a cathedral-like sound on Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun) while a beautiful subdued version of Red House closes this CD. Jimi Hendrix- guitar, vocal Mitch Mitchell- drums Noel Redding- Bass, backing vocals (Except tracks 11, and 12)

This is the first in a seven disc series. These are concerts played by The Jimi Hendrix Experience in Sweden between 1967 - 68. All concerts are from the lowest generation masters available. I do not know the generations of the interviews but I can tell you that they are very low and that they are the best I have come across in over 30 years of collecting Hendrix material. Please note that the original cassette recording for the first source 24th May 1967: Stora Scenen, Grona Lund, Tivoli Garden, Stockholm, was transferred by the taper to reel to reel. There was then a subsequent transfer so the all copies originating from it should be considered second generation. There are no master copies. Note also that the second source for this show is inferior in every way to the first but has been included here to complete the set. Sorry there is no artwork available at the moment. If you want to know what else is coming up then please check out the "material from the attic" section on IN FROM THE STORM at http://home.online.no/~hpjohnse/hendrix.html
