Notes:
A great look into studio workings as quite a bit of it is unedited so you get to hear the talk, tune-ups, etc.
On CD 1, there may be quite a few "Power Of Soul" but outside the Band Of Gypsys shows, this song was never again played live. "Valleys" never once was. "Heaven Has No Sorrow" is a great song that never made past this demo phase, but it's a wonderful song indeed! If that's not enough, CD 1 ends with an 18 minute Stepping Stone!!
CD 2 features takes of "Izabella", "Machine Gun" and the semi common "Lord I Sing The Blues.."
What really makes all of this 2 CDR set extra special is the sound quality which is perfect!! It's first generation off the master reels! Throw away your hissy bootleg because this is a lot better!

During the spring of 1969, John McLaughlin joined Hendrix, Buddy Miles and Dave Holland at the Record Plant for an informal instrumental jam. About 20 minutes of this workout is available on collectors tapes. The recording features Jimi's jazz-rock interpretation of the 'Drivin' South' theme followed by a spirited blues arrangement. The McLaughlin Sessions is a 76-minute release that delivers only the first 12-minutes of the jam, with additional material taken from the 5/14/69 studio session with Larry Young, plus three other "Nine To The Universe" tracks.

"Room Full Of Mirrors sound collage" which is described as, "Jimi in his flat talking, and doing some free association, into a tape recorder. Not easy to follow, but you gather he is thinking about lots of things, including his fame and some of the emptiness he is feeling. A bit rambling, but an interesting glimpse into the man. Seems like he is with a woman who is sleeping andhe seems to slip the mic in front of her and we hear her breathing. The recording lasts 21 minutes, but the last 7 minutes are the breathing and background music."

- Although a recording of one of the 1969 concerts in Honolulu, Hawaii had been rumoured to exist for many
years, this tape didn't come into general circulation until the release of this set in 2004. By then several fake versions had however already made their way to the public, including an edited version of the Philadelphia 12.04.69 recording released on the bootleg Major Tom MT 014 "Live in Honolulu" (ftbfs: B576).
- The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed three nights at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu may-june 1969, and a high degree of uncertainty surrounds the exact date for this particular recording; The correct date might as well be 31.05.69 or 01.06.69 as the 30.05.69 date given here.

Although Jimi Hendrix's touring band name changed during the summer of 1969, the festival MC, Chip Monck, introduced the group as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but from the stage Hendrix stated: "We decided to change the whole thing around and call it Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. For short, it's nothin' but a Band of Gypsys." Hendrix began formally using the name "Band of Gypsy's" shortly thereafter, and this performance is filed under Band of Gypsy's at db.etree.org.

Extraordinary Archives Traded Material series of the highest quality Hendrix recordings available in traders' circuits.
All recordings in the ATM series are taken from the lowest generation masters available, and they have all been digitally restored unless otherwise indicated.
Thanks to Hans-Peter Johnsen
This set collects material recorded at Jimi's house on Traver Hollow Road in the summer of 1969.
Most were probably recorded on the 4-track machine that Eddie Kramer installed at Jimi's request; some are possibly recorded on 2-track.
The first 2 tracks on Disc 1 were recorded by Gerry Guida on a portable reel recorder.
Although this material has often been referred to as The Woodstock Rehearsals, much of this could never have been considered for inclusion at that show.
In addition, this isn't a "complete" Shokan collection;
Other recordings include the Ephron jams (ATM 193-194 "At His Best?") and possibly the jams with a 2nd guitarist that were collected on ATM 072-073 "Healing Power".
Portions of these recordings have previously appeared on the collectors' sets ATM 003 "The Woodstock Rehearsals", ATM 044 "Drinking Wine, Sipping Time" and ATM 072-073 "Healing Power". Some of those are upgraded here.
There's also little definite information regarding recording dates and personnel.
While most of these recordings are thought to be from August, some could also be from July or September.
The first 2 tracks were earlier thought to have been recorded in Beverly Hills in mid-1969; John McDermott and Gerry Guida recently confirmed that they were recorded on Guida's portable reel machine at the Shokan house.
There are two songs with vocals by Larry, Why I Sing the Blues and Ain't Got Nobody, where Jimi's playing is not evident.
The final block of material is just Jimi and Mitch. It has been speculated from the themes quoted in this section that it might come from after Woodstock, possibly early September, so it was placed last in the collection.
This set upgrades portions of material found on ATM 003 The Woodstock Rehearsals, ATM 044 Drinking Wine, Sipping Time and ATM 072-073 Healing Power.
More Shokan recordings are available on ATM 193-194 At His Best? (The Mike Ephron Sessions) and ATM 035 Apartment Jams / ATM 072-073 Healing Power (The so-called Taj Mahal Jams some sources list the recording date and location for the Apartment Jams [aka. the so-called "Taj Mahal Jams"] as Jimi's Apartment, New York City, NY 21.01.70, but it's more likely the recordings were made around the same time as the Woodstock Rehearsals at Jimi's House, Shokan, NY july-aug.1969.).

The album that demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt why Jimi Hendrix still reigns supreme as the God of Guitar. Jimi takes no vocals on any of the six tracks, preferring instead to let his guitar cry and sing. This is a brilliant example of Jimi's fluid improvisational genius. He playing is ratcheted up another notch in the fertile jam-session setting of these astounding recordings, which showcase his creative energy and virtuosity. We are able to hear Hendrix thinking aloud, and he consistently astounds the listener with the force of his ideas. He pairs up on one track with legendary jazz organist Larry Young (who played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew), creating a jazz-rock masterpiece that outshines in intensity anything recorded by latter day guitar heroes. The electrifying interplay that he and Young achieve leaves one wondering what kind of music Jimi could have made with Miles Davis, had he not died just one week before they were scheduled to record together in a London studio. This session hints strongly at one of the many possible directions Jimi's music was headed prior to his tragic death in September 1970. This long out-of-print masterpiece deserves to be immediately re-released. Write to your local congressman.

Jimi Hendrix & Traffic - A Session

Jam Thing
Guitar Thing
Session Thing
This is the often talked about session that Jimi recorded with the members of Traffic (Steve Winwood's band at the time).
As the CD arts tells you "This session was recorded at an unknown place in the late 60's."
A purely instrumental affair, alternately dated as 1968 or 1970, this studio material is among the most intriguing
unreleased pieces of either performer. The lineup is listed as Jimi Hendrix (guitar), Steve Winwood (piano), Chris Wood
(flute), Rick Grech (bass), and Jim Capaldi (drums), but the actual lineup of these recordings is uncertain. Only Hendrix
is identifiable with certainty. The overall sound resembles Traffic, and the piano and flute parts seem particularly
recognizable as Steve and Chris, respectively.
The music on this cd consists of jams that, in contrast to Traffic's usual melodic sensibilities, range from minor key to
almost atonal structure. Some of the magic of the "Voodoo Chile" session is also evident on this recording. The jams sound
basically spontaneous, organized around particular keys with shifting tempos, and lack a distinct song structure. None of
them sound like they were even intended to have vocal parts. For the most part, the piano and drums drive the rhythms while
the guitar and flute solo. The extraordinary aspect of the recording is the complementary interplay between Jimi and Chris.
While Jimi builds upon driving vamps that eventually erupt into molten solos, Chris counterbalances with his usual delicate,
mellowing flute. The result of this collaboration is at least interesting, and sometimes magical. Unlike other Hendrix jam
sessions, Jimi seems to have a lot of respect for Traffic and doesn't fully dominate the proceedings, which makes the
session perhaps unique to both entities.

Throw away your hissy bootleg because this is a lot better

Stepping Stone (1)
A 3-disc collection of available studio recordings from the Gypsy Suns and Rainbows. These recordings date from late August to mid-September 1969, a period of a little over two weeks. The recordings all likely took place at the Hit Factory except for the last track (from the Record Plant). Shortly afterwards Jerry and Larry left the group, and the ensemble that played at Woodstock was only a memory.
Together with the Shokan tapes and the complete Woodstock live concert, these complete the coverage of the brief existence of the GSR.
