Though not as famous as the Hotel Tape, This recording from Bonnie Beecher's apartment predates that one by half a year. Dylan's progress was explosive during this time, and half a year was a lifetime. The tape is nowhere near the league of the later recording, partly because of the low quality of the original recording, and partly due to a remarkably uninspired performance. One of the first times that a young Bob would hear himself on tape; nerves, inexperience, and limited repertoire would result in, at best, this mediocre offering. The tape is significant, however, not only for its historical importance, but also as a standard by which to compare the December tape.

AKA "Minnesota Hotel Tape."
This tape has been in wide circulation for many years. It was actually the first bootleg ever produced. It was released on a 2 LP set in 1969, and went by the title 'Great White Wonder' It has been available under various titles a countless number of times in the decades that followed. The quality has generally been very good, and the performance tells the story of a fresh faced boy just out of high school, who had the energy and natural 'world-traveled weariness' quality that would forever change the world. It is absolutely required material for even the smallest collection.

Early Dylan: 61/62 Compilation Setlist and Information
Show Information
This set donated by Phil Monnier is an outstanding early Dylan (61/62) compilation. This set includes tracks from The Oscar Brand interview (10-29-61), Carnegie Chapter Hall (11-04-61), Bonnie Beacher's Apartment (12-22-61), and the Leeds Demo (Feb. 62). The 11-04-61 and 12-22-61 shows are serious improvements from what most Dylan traders have access to. Phil speculates that only a handful of traders around the world have these shows in this quality. It is an unbelievable set. Another dylantree essential!
From Phil...
"The main purpose of this cd compilation is to give Dylan newbies excellent sounding early soundboard material. Both 12-22-61 and 11-04-61 are tremendous upgrades to anything that has been released on boot over the years."
This set isn't just for newbies! The 12/22 and 11/04 sets are an incredible improvement.

Shortly after Bob Dylan arrived in New York in January 1961, he met Eve and Mac McKenzie at Gerdes Folk City, introduced to him by Woody Guthrie’s wife, Marjorie. Folk enthusiasts, the McKenzie’s had an apartment north of the Village where some of the young would-be folk musicians often met up. Dylan became a regular visitor and soon a houseguest too, sleeping on the couch in the family’s living room. This release features the best of all three of the recordings Bob completed at the apartment all of which were made on a vintage reel-to-reel tape machine in the informal setting of the McKenzie apartment. The audio quality of these tapes is not in line with modern and consideration should be given to the circumstances in which these recordings were created.
