Staska and Mangrum 1971: "The New Monk was SRO and when they began playing, the crowd couldn't sit still. Garcia also did some singing. They got together some bluegrass (which Garcia is known for), gospel and rock."

This set is incorrectly listed on etree under various dates at "Jetty's" or "Jetty's Theater Music Hall" in Washington, D.C., but as Peter Braverman correctly questioned, either the date or venue is unlikely, given the Dead's touring schedule. I know for a fact that both the date and venue are incorrect. The Dead and NRPS were in St. Louis for two shows on 12/9 and 12/10/71 and this impromptu jam happened when they went out to Scotty's music on the afternoon of 12/10. I was there. If you listen carefully, at the beginning of Track 9 you can hear Marmaduke ask Scotty if he can use the phone to call for a taxi.
