In 1975, Daddy Cool frontman and Aussie rock legend Ross Wilson was producing records for Skyhooks rather than recording himself due to contractual problems with his record company. He decided to produce a Christmas single for Mushroom Records, a cover of the Chuck Berry?s Run Run Rudolph, but needed someone to sing it. He chose Joe Camilleri (aka Joey Vincent) well known in the Melbourne music scene for a decade due to his work in various blues outfits. Wilson put together a backing band for him and the first Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons lineup was complete. The single went nowhere but when Wilson started his own record label, Oz Records he signed the band and a single called Beating Around The Bush soon followed. As new material was written the band began to veer away from their traditional r&b roots into a more ?new wave? rock sound. Elvis Costello recorded one Camilleri tune ?So Young? and former Procol Harum member Peter Solley, working in Australia producing other bands asked to work with JJZ & the Falcons after seeing them perform ?Shape I?m In?. A string of hit singles and albums followed including Hats Off Step Lively & Screaming Targets, but Camilleri felt stifled working under Solley and decided to head out on his own. In 1981 a new lineup called simply Jo Jo Zep released the album Cha and the band toured the U.S. Joe Camilleri was less than pleased with the American tour and decided that he needed another change of direction. (The new direction would be The Black Sorrows) Joe Camilleri: Vocals, Sax, Guitar Jeff Burstin: Guitar, Vocals Tony Faehse: Guitar, Vocals John Power: Bass, Vocals Wilbur Wilde: Sax, Vocals Gary Young: Drums, Vocals
