Soundcheck: Kicksville, Gun or Run, Soma Shop, Camera Set: A thing called Love, Camera, Cracker, My flash on you, Gun or Run, Old Tattoo, No mercy on Ravers, The Drifter, Kicksville, Can't remember, Lifetime, Soma Shop, Psychosis, Mind Garage Encore: Better Hurry
The first show of 2007 and the first show with new drummer Lars Puder! The venue is packed with a fairly mixed audience -- this is the biggest crowd the band has yet played to in Berlin. Brotherhood takes the stage to Country Joe & The Fish's "A thing called love" to perform a consistent set of Brotherhood-classics in new improved sound. The new drums drive the band forward with heavy and tight beats increasing the speed of most numbers by several notches, particularly the garage hits "Gun or Run", "Old Tattoo" and "Psychosis" gain a new in-your-face quality. While "The Drifter" and "Better hurry" feature some truly blistering guitar by Kiryk, the jams are fairly ordinary not leaving well known paths but making up for the lost looseness with an agressive treatment that provides great climaxes when the band resumes the two songs after their middle jam. A very heavy show, played by a noticably nervous but highly concentrated band for an interested audience.

This is Brotherhood's debut performance in Potsdam. They perform to eight people in a 300 capacity ballroom! This is the worst attended Brotherhood show to date! Six out of the eight attendees aren't even from Potsdam -- they are longtime hardcore companions from Berlin. The setting is surreal: a giant stage and PA, almost more technicians than audience and the band takes the stage to an empty room. In order to draw the very few people into the hall they launch into a couple of minutes of noisy space jam reminiscent of the typical "Acid comes to me"-intros to many a Liquid Visions show. Despite a really bad monitor stage-sound the band performs a cool show highlighted by a unique slowed down version of "Can't remember" and a massive jammed out version of "Better Hurry" (20 minutes). Kiryk jokes about the small crowd: he announces the next gig the following day (in Berlin) as a show "in einem kleinen Dorf nebenan" (a small village nearby) & he dedicates "Kicksville" to Potsdam's psychedelic scene that has gathered today. They close the show with "Better hurry". This version is of really progressive proportions. It is the first ever version that goes into the jam-portion with a spacy psych jam instead of the usual blues-scheme. From there the band builds up a very interesting free from space that goes through various moods ranging from delicate and quiet space to raging riffs. Somewhere in the jam occurs a slight tease of The Grateful Dead's "Good lovin'". Before they resume the song they take it down one last time for Lars to perform a lenghty drum-solo. The band cuts the set short though -- on the setlist but not played: "Soma shop", "Mind garage" & "The Drifter" (encore).

Basement
Berlin
Germany

Space -> Old Tattoo, My Flash On You, Camera, Cracker, Gun Or Run, No Mercy On Ravers, The Drifter, Can't Remember, Kicksville, Psychosis, Last Song About You, Lifetime, Soma Shop Encore 1: Better Hurry Encore 2: Mind Garage
The Basement is a tiny vault of a chapel: brick walls and ceilings, a very small and low stage as well as an improvised bar make for a typical Friedrichshain setting. The show is comfortably attended by young alternative people who are there to party on a Saturday night. The band plays through their backline creating a simply perfect, warm, yet stinging sound: all instruments and vocals are distinctive and clearly distinguishable -- this is how Brotherhood should be listened to! The performance too leaves nothing to desired, particularly the first 30 minutes find the band blasting through their repertoire at their most explosive, pure garage punk! A brilliant version of "The drifter" features finest pling-plong psychedelia, crazy 'n' weird stuff! The mood is great, lots of interaction with the responsive audience occurs. As opposed to the night before in Potsdam where the song was turned into a prog-monster "Better hurry" is a lean 10 minute power dance track tonight, designed to feature a white-hot Kiryk-solo and nothing else. Erik & Kiryk also perform their little choreography during the drum-break and they engage the audience in soul-clapping. In rare fashion they play a second encore, a little past the venue's midnight curfew but the party audience deserves it tonight. On the setlist but not played: "A thing called love" and "Surrender".

Big Bang Bar
Barcelona
Spain

Sounds -> Camera, Cracker, My flash on you, Gun or run, Last song about you, Lifetime, Soma shop, Kicksville, No mercy on ravers, Surrender, A thing called love (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova), Better hurry (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova) Encore: The drifter -> Summer -> The drifter (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova) Soundcheck: Cracker, Better hurry jam (both partial)
Brotherhood's first ever show abroad! Big Bang Bar is situated in El Raval, which happens to be a particularly wild quarter of Barcelona with narrow streets, a large population of muslim immigrants, way run down premises that house many old traditional bars, bodegas and obscure joints as well as some newly opened hip bars. The concert room of Big Bang Bar is a very intimate square 6x6 meter back-room with a maximum capacity of 100 people. The band plays on equipment they did lend from other bands in Barcelona: a Korg organ, a Vox guitar amp as well as very cool Fender Bassman gives them an appropriate sound. Like everything in Spain the concert starts late, around 23:30, but the people are there from the first song, they start to move and dance instantly. Kiryk is obviously nervous which shows in his lenghty stage banter. He tries to turn the people on and to make clear what the band is here for: "We are here to party!". The audience definitely picks up the offer to freak freely and makes the show a true Brotherhood Dance Concert! In the middle of the set the band debuts the new Erik-penned number "Surrender", it has been ommitted from the setlists in the most recent shows but tonight it is finally performed and the band really nails this short garage number! Before "A thing called love" Kiryk asks if there is someone from Germany in the audience and to his utter amazement one person, who is even familiar with the band, actually is. Then he asks for Swedish people and someone screams a response in Swedish to which Erik comments in Swedish too. This encourages Kiryk to further ask for people from Poland, but no-one cheers, so he jokingly adds "...oh, everybody!". From "Love" on for the rest of the show the band is being joined by Daniel Segura Villanova, aka as Danny, the bass player of The Born Losers, a surf outfit from Barcelona. Danny did arrange the show, he is a huge Brotherhood fan. Tonight he plays guitar adding a genuine West Coast quality to Brotherhood's sound by providing hot rhythm guitar as well as stinging solos in the most original Garcia/Kaukonen style! Danny takes the first solo in the 13 minute version of "Better hurry". After his solo they take it down and Kiryk announces the Dance Contest: he offers a free CD to the person who would come up on stage to dance! One girl actually does so and Kiryk switches position with her by jumping off the stage inmidts the first row. He proceeds to play a sexy solo firing up the girl on stage who delivers a great dance turning on the audience! Eventually she leaves the stage and receives her free CD while the band explodes with another smoking jam before they take it down again in order to perform their very own dance! During the dance Kiryk is the most animated, he bangs the cymbals and wham!, there they go back into the conclusion of the song! For the encore "The drifter" (13 min) they pull off a great psychedelic jam, with Danny playing the original guitar parts of the song, while Kiryk and Erik effortlessly slip into Straw Fever's "Summer", complete with lyrics, it has been quite a few shows since they were inspired enough to feature this sweet tease! A way exotic and far out concert experience for band and companions alike, musically and party-wise satisfying everyone! A great concert debut in Spain leaving an impression on the first ever foreign crowd!

Go!Leida Festival, La Boite
Lleida
Spain

Soundcheck: Gun or run jam, Jam (Erik, Sergi on drums, Lars on bass), Camera, Cracker, Kicksville jam (all songs partial) Set: Introduction -> Camera, Cracker, My flash on you, Gun or run, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Last song about you, Mind garage, Soma shop, Kicksville, No mercy on ravers, Surrender
The sixth edition of the 60s weekend "Go!Lleida" features Brotherhood on the second of three nights. The small festival takes place in the city of Lleida in Catalunya, 150 km northeast of Barcelona. People from all over Spain and France gather for a cosy meeting of mod-fans featuring live music, Northern Soul Allnighters and accompanying activities like a music and clothes market or Vespa/scooter runs. Other bands performing during the weekend are The Phantom Keys (E), Monseigneur Lafayette (BE) and Cool Frog (E). Brotherhood performs first on saturday night followed by the band from Belgium. The venue is a very stylish 1970s nightclub type of room with lots of shiny gold and silver decorations, carpets and mirrors. The bands play while the people enter the venue as a kind of warm up and as a background to the market held at the same time, the main focus of the evening is on the Allnighter DJ/Dance event afterwards. The crowd is thus comparetively small, between 70 and 100 people watch the show, not all of them stay for the entire set, people stop by on their way to the bar and the market. The band plays on rented equipment again, a nice Farfisa gives them their original sound and the sound on and off stage is simply excellent allowing them to play a show free of technical troubles. They take the stage to a lounge-organ melody played by Erik during which Kiryk introduces the individual band members and then they rip into "Camera". As opposed to the previous night in Barcelona they focus on the songs and cut away most of the stage banter tonight. The crowd enjoys the show, they don't freak out like the people in Barcelona but some of them dance and most people listen in an interested manner. After the show many express their enthusiasm about Brotherhoods unique brand of Garagerock to the band-members. The band performs a short but solid and professional set highlighted by an upbeat version "A thing called love" and a great version of "Kicksville". Due to heavy partying the night before Kiryk has a sore voice tonight which makes him miss most of the notes in "Love". In his eighth show with the band Lars is super on delivering an outstanding performance, he just gets better and better! The second ever performance of "Surrender" (debuted the night before) closes the set finishing an all too short but exciting Spain adventure!

Red Rooster
Berlin
Germany

Old Tattoo, My Flash On You, Camera, Cracker, Gun Or Run, No Mercy On Ravers, Better Hurry, A Thing Called Love, Kicksville, Last Song About You, Lifetime, Soma Shop, Little Red Rooster, Mind Garage, Surrender Encore: The Drifter
A genuine dance concert in Berlin-Friedrichshain which has become Brotherhood's very own home turf by now. The band hasn't played Berlin for two months (since 16.02.2007 at Basement) and after a handful of very mixed and varied shows outside of Berlin in the meantime they are now happy to be back. Support act Treacle People from Worms play some really proggy 70s influenced music which doesn't get the people going at all, the vibe is very low and people sit down and wait for Brotherhood. When the band enters the small stage Kiryk invites the people to stand up, to come closer and "party, party, party -- if you wanna dance then dance" and off they go into "Old tattoo"! Despite the very fast paced beginning of the show it was common consensus among the attendees that the band didn't really take off until "Better hurry". Indeed, this cool 15 minute version features Kiryk on fire for several solos, he shouts "West Coast, West Coast" in a Hip-Hop manner when they take it down for the first time and he pulls off more solo guitar even including Hendrix-style solo singing. This version also features a bass solo by Jan as well as a very long and cool dance performance which amuses and incites the crowd: from now on the vibe is ultimately turned to party and dance concert! For the second time ever they perform "Little red rooster", it's a great version with Kiryk delivering a hot Jagger-esque performance including a great harmonica solo! Throughout the entire show the band is joined by a friend of Erik on percussion. Unfortunately the guy is inaudible for the majority of the concert but when he can be heard he adds an exotic flavour to "Lifetime" and "The drifter". Thanks to a dancing hometown crowd this is a great party-concert which finds the band in nice spirits.

Affenclub
Klein Machnow
Germany

Kicksville, Lifetime, Camera, Gun Or Run, Cracker, No Mercy On Ravers, Soma Shop, Better Hurry (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova), A Thing Called Love (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova), Little Red Rooster (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova), The Drifter -> Old Tattoo (w/ Daniel Segura Villanova), My Flash On You, Surrender Encore: Mind Garage Soundcheck: Gun Or Run
Though directly adjacant to Berlin(-Zehlendorf) the small suburb Kleinmachow is as provincial as it gets. The small village hasn't got a proper village center just a small shopping mall circling a building that houses the townhouse. Nearby is the local youth community center and the Affenclub is situated in the basement of the very same building. The audience is composed of the local youth, between 14 and 16 years old. This is not a dance concert, just one person dances throughout the entire show and he appropriately wins the free CD during the "Better hurry"-dance contest. Only half of the 45 attendants/paying guests are even in the same room as the concert but those who are give good applause and decent reaction to the band while keeping seated or behind tables for the entire show. Brotherhood don't mind, they play a well-spirited, in parts even outstandingly inspired concert, all the while donning broad smiles. Kiryk particularly makes a great show by moving a lot, dancing and acting as a true show man! Beginning with the mid-temp numbers they increase the tempo of the show gradually. The Born Loser's Daniel Segura Villanova from Barcelona joins the band on guitar for a major portion of the show, just as during their concert in Barcelona 30.03.2007. Kiryk announces him as "speziellen Gast" who came especially for the show to Berlin. Again Danny adds a great West Coast charakter to the bands sound, providing great solos in "Love" and "Better hurry" as well as a cool Bob Weir-like rhythm to "The Drifter". The band holds a dance contest in "Better hurry" and they do their dance, though not very wildly. A surprise comes in the middle of the set: "Little red roster", not on the setlist, is pulled out spontaneously and they rip through it in true garage style (without harmonica). This is the first time that the song has been played at another venue than Berlin's Red Rooster Backstage bar. The definite highlight of the show is a wild and extraordinarily hot "Drifter" that finds Kiryk very inspired, he surpasses many of his previous year 2007 solos and makes this the most spine tingling version of the song of the year so far: he puts all his might into the solo to make it burn and smoke and he does the Hendriy-style solo singing. He also engages the audience in a back and forth "Yeah, yeah, yeah"-chant and they resume this remarkable version -- goosebumps and dropping jaws among the companions! More remarkable guitar freak-out can be heard in the encore “Mind garage” that finds Kiryk producing crazy technoid sounds with his effect pedals.

Hafenklang Exil
Hamburg
Germany

Set: Quiet noise -> Old tattoo, Gun or run, My flash on you, Camera, A thing called love, No mercy on ravers, The drifter, Cracker, Little red rooster, Surrender Encore 1: Better hurry Encore 2: Mind garage
The group’s third time in Hamburg but the first time they play to a “regular” crowd, i.e. not Dead Head audience. They share the bill with friends Cpt. Howdy from Hamburg. Hafenklang Exil is located in the basement of a former Karstadt department store, a very cool joint! Despite this being a Sunday a crowd of 80 people gathers. The majority of the audience is here to see local heroes Cpt. Howdy and Brotherhood makes the mistake of letting them play first -- two thirds of the crowd leave after Cpt. Howdy’s set of high energetic and original Rhythm & Blues. The few who stay seriously dig the Hood’s show tough. A competent Brotherhood set, apart from a brief malfunkshion of Kiryk’s guitar during “The drifter” free of technical troubles. After the show the two bands party until dawn and the cats from Cpt. Howdy totally destroy the Brotherhood with their party- and drinking stamina. Howdy ärgere dich nicht!

Flower Power
Leipzig
Germany

Soundcheck: Kicksville (instr. jam), Camera, Gun or run, Mind garage jam Set: Lifetime, Camera, Bossa Nova jam, Gun or run, Old tattoo, Cracker -> The drifter, No mercy on ravers -> Drum solo -> Kicksville, Last song about you, A thing called love, Better hurry Encore: My flash on you, Mind garage
A very cosy show in an intimate 60s/70s theme-pub with free entry to concerts. The band performs in one corner of the pub, a very tiny podium serves as stage, the band-members can barely move. The sound is excellent and the venue fills up with a good crowd. Since there is so little room to dance the people in front of the improvised stage sit on small tables and very small leather stoolsm or pillows on the floor. No dancing but the atmosphere is very nice anyway, people listen to the music instead of talking and they give appropriate feedback between songs. Brotherhood enjoys playing for the people, they kick ass and deliver a very alert performance. Early on, during the first notes of "Camera", the guitar goes totally mute and Kiryk fails to find the defect while singing the song so they just continue and play the entire song without guitar. While Kiryk fixes his equipment the others pull off a cute Bossa Nova jam for a couple of minutes. During "The drifter" Kiryk introduces the band's name to the audience and he tells them to do what they like: "Ihr könnt euch ausziehen, ihr könnt tanzen, ihr könnt Stühle an die Wand schmeißen, tut was ihr wollt!". A revitalised Kiryk, who had been diagnosed diabetes mellitus Typ B just four days before the show, flies high on the two jams: though of average lenght his guitar playing in "The drifter" (11 min) and "Better hurry" (13 min) has a confident, healthy and energetic quality that makes for extremely well played and inspired solos particularly during "Better hurry" which is this night's towering psychedelic moment! Now on insulin for four days and obviously doing better than the weeks before Kiryk already takes his disease with grain of irony when asking the audience jokingly towards the end of the concert: “Alles klar mit Eurem Zucker?”. Though of pretty informal charakter this concert pleases audience and band likewise and thus makes for a nice Brotherhood debut in Leipzig. On the setlist but not played: "Soma shop" (between "Flash" and "Mind garage").

Schützengasse
Weimar
Germany

Soundcheck: Gun Or Run (partial), Mind Garage (instr. Jam) Set: Lifetime, Camera, Gun Or Run, Old Tattoo, Cracker, The Drifter, No Mercy On Ravers, Kicksville, Last Song About You, A Thing Called Love, Better Hurry -> Mountain Jam -> Better Hurry Encore 1: My Flash On You, Soma Shop, Mind Garage -> Jam -> Mind Garage Encore 2: Can't Remember, Little Red Rooster
This concert is very badly attendend, just 30 people in a 200 capacity room. Schützengasse is more of a mainstream type of venue on two floors with the second floor being a Techno-disco generally designed for a straighter kind of crowd as Brotherhood would draw in, let's say, Berlin! Also the people running the venue are very uptight! The band plays at simply ear-shattering volume that's why the small crowd doesn't dare to move to the front of the stage, they remain in the very back of the hall and no-one dances. The bros rip powerfully through their repertoire anyway with "Old tattoo" being an early highlight, a really liquid organ lines drives the band forward, Lars enjoys pounding it out and they finish this great version as a true garage blast with broad smiles on their faces. An energetic version of "Cracker" follows before they dive into "The drifter" (13 min). Here Kiryk breaks a string after his first solo and while he switches and tunes his second guitar the band continues with an Erik-driven jam that also features great work from Lars. Upon Kiryk's return he takes the charge and sneaks into the jam with some quiet psychedelic lines heavy on the Wah-Wah before increasing the intensity again leading the jam towards a roaring climax. "No mercy" follows with equal power. Tonight again, just as the previous day in Leipzig, "Better hurry" (10 min) is one of the concert's highlight with the “new” Kiryk letting totally loose on the solo, harkening back to his blues roots by slipping effortlessly into a full blown quote of the Allman Brother Band's "Mountain jam"-theme and weaving it seamlessly into his own jamming -- wowza Magnificent Brothers Band! Another magic jam comes soon enough during the first encore: "Mind garage", usually a number without jam, features tonight the finest psychedelic jam of the weekend. Shortly before they would normally hit the coda they surprisingly take it down and start to systematically build up an atmospheric piece of proggy psychedelia featuring great and emphatic work by Lars and Jan, heavy drones by Erik and on top of it all a very deep and beautifully developped Kiryk-theme. This jam last six minutes and then they resume the tune with flurry piles of notes! After "Mind garage" the band is finished but the people running the venue are so extremly square and uptight as to insist on 90 minutes playtime by the band as written in the contract. The club's booker convinces the band to play two more numbers so they come back to the stage not without telling the crowd they just do it because they have been asked to fulfill the contract which incites some laughter among the attendees and of course ridicules the club. They proceed to play the by now relatively rare "Can't remember" as well as a kick ass version of "Little red rooster" and then they leave the stage without many words. Musically an engaged and playful show despite the frustrating circumstances.

Roadrunner's Paradise Club
Berlin
Germany

Set: Space -> Lifetime, Kicksville, Can't remember, Soma shop, Camera, A thing called love, Gun or run, My flash on you, Old tattoo, The drifter, No mercy on ravers, Cracker, Last song about you, Better hurry Encore 1: Mind Garage Encore 2: Little red rooster, Surrender
Brotherhood's third ever appearance (in little more than a year) at the Roadrunner's finds them sharing a bill with Dota & Die Stadtpiraten, a jazzy Bossa Nova German-Lyrics Singer-Songwriter project lead by Berlin's Kleingeldprinzession Dota. Jan shares duties here with being the regular guitar player of the band. Due to the quieter charakter of Dota's music she plays first though she is the actual headliner of the night. The overwhelming majority of the audience comes to see Dota but a surprisingly large number of the crowd (two thirds) stays for the Brotherhood show and gets turned on! The Hood takes the stage to an excellent sound -- since their last show on this stage the club had improved its equipment -- engaging in a brief jam that leads to "Lifetime". The concert is being build up with slower/mid-tempo numbers up to "Camera" which is introduced by Kiryk with: "...und jetzt kommen wir langsam zu den tanzbaren Nummern". Indeed: the crowd already moving engagedly through the first numbers now shifts to the fith gear by freaking out more wildly and wildly as the band rips through its garage hits with vigilance, originality and tightness! It’s a delight to watch the band play tonight: The Hood exhibits a playfullness and elation in their playing rivaled by very few shows this line up has played since its formation in January, perhaps only equaled by the concert at Basement 17.02.2007. This is proven by broad smiles between the band members, particularly Lars and Jan communicate a lot with each other, obviously enjoying to perfectly nail the rhythm parts and creating a beast of groove! As always when being in a great mood the band peaks on “Old tatto” making this a powerhouse version with rumbling drums that provide the ultimate impetus! “The drifter” features well dosed, comparitively straight and mainstream psychedelic jams not leaving danceable structures – the jam is being boiled down to its essential, transcendental core, which also applies to “Better hurry”. Great playing nonetheless with Kiryk confidently shining on the guitar! “No mercy” follows “The drifter”, a great and frequent coupling in the band’s set that elevates the psychedelic energy of the former’s to the latter. The crowd is of course still freaking out, the entire floor is filled with six rows of frantically dancing people who cheer delightfully within and between the songs. The main set closer “Better hurry”, just little over ten minutes, presents itself with the hottest Kiryk-jam of the night. He delivers his trademark liquid-yet-tight-loose-yet-straight solo leading higher and higher through subtle alterations of the theme while playing many notes at the same time greatly encompassing and transcending the style of his Sixties West Coast ideals! He speeds towards for several minutes before taking it down shortly to adress the people with some “Yeahs” and then he loudly cunts the band with “One two - one two - one two three four” back to highspeed tempo. Eventually during Lars' solo they do the dance, wich is particularly impressive tonight due to the great stage of club, earning cheers from the crowd.Returning for the encore “Mind garage” Kiryk gives commands to the band to let it feature a jam. He proceeds to lead them through a cool but fairly loose alternate version of the tune but when it is time to hit the jam he cuts it off leaving his band mates in a moment of confusion before they go off. The people however strongly demand a second encore so the band reappears and Kiryk asks if they want “a fast one...or a fast one”. There wasn’t a choice anyway as the band blasts off two more garage punk numbers to finish the night and of course the people make good use of their last chance to dance! A picture perfect Dance Concert night convincing all companions but also winning many more new admirers hile emphasizing and justifying the band’s claim on the golden road to unlimited devotion!

Lovelite

Germany

Soundcheck: included Camera, Kicksville Set: Bossa Nova Intro, Old tattoo, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Camera, The drifter, No mercy on ravers, Kicksville, A thing called love, Mind garage, Soma shop, Can't remember, Lifetime, Surrender Encore: Better hurry -> Turn on your lovelight
Notes: A steamingly hot and sweaty night that finds Brotherhood rocking out for a partying, screaming, clapping, jiving and dancing Berlin-Friedrichshain fanbase! This is the band's first performance at the Lovelite! The Lovelite, one of the quarter's most important clubs and a genuine Friedrichshain alternative joint, has been hosting Berlin's longest running and best established Sixties/Beat/Garage concert series Club Hektor for years and tonight it's the last ever Club Hektor at this venue as the Lovelite is about to suspend it's regular concert schedule. An honour to play here for the band and of course, being Berlin's hottest and most active Garage and Psych band, a Dance Concert at this place has been long overdue! Despite this being a very hot and humid summer night the club fills up very well proving that the band draws more people to their concerts than most other acts from the Berlin guitar underground. Very well after midnight the band takes the stage, warms up with a few minutes of jam during which Kiryk says briefly hello and then they dive right into "Old tattoo" and turn the power to the max. Brotherhood light up a firework of garage blasts that gets the crowd going hard. Deafening applause between the songs, the people dance, whistle and scream in delight, many also recognize the songs although the band hasn't even released an album yet. A great version of "The drifter" receives more applause, people freak out to a mindblowing Kiryk solo and the ensueing jam takes the crowd for a ride which the people acknowledge with pleased whistling, cheering and stomping! Midset the band takes the pace down a bit so that everybody can breath a bit but they raise the tempo again with some more hard rocking numbers from their reportoire of flashy Garage-Punk-Psychedelia. The crowd strongly and loudly demands an encore while the band is on the side of the stage smiling, gasping for breath and being soaked to the bones. A great danceable "Better hurry" during which the band performs their dance of course seges into "Lovelight" after Lars' solo in order to honour the occasion. This is a very loose version as the band hasn't played this number for well over a year. They wipe the crowd to a last frenzy and shortly before everyone collapses of heat and dehydration the show is over leaving band and audience alike satisfied and many stunned and exited. Once again it is an incredible Friedrichshain concert that perfectly illustrates and highlights the band's growing status as hot music and dance act!

The third Brotherhood show of three on this day. This concert was also originally scheduled to take place outside in a pretty park next to the venue but was moved inside the youth club because of the continueing heavy rain. Showtime 10 pm. Tradtionally Brotherhood is a late night band, peaking when people dance and party. Consequently this is the best gig of the day and the only one to resemble at least a bit a Dance Concert. Many people sit in the back but a small crowd stands in front of the stage, some dance, some swing gently to the music. The band kicks and is ultimately warmed up by now. Jan’s bass is very unpfront in the mix giving the sound a special groove. Kiryk plays some of his best solos of the day particularly shining with a metallicly hot guitar in “Love”. “The drifter” is of average lenght (12 min) and comparetivly soft with a slightly mellow and psychedelic Pink Floyd-flavour in the quieter parts. Before a burning “Mind garage” Kiryk asks the audience for help and he leads them into a handclap which they keep up for the first verse of the song. The brothers ancore with the double stroke of “Last song” and “Surrender” played directly back to back without even a second gap between the songs. A fairly satisfying gig to round off a day of music that had been ruined by the rain consequently diminshing the band’s chance to play for bigger crowds.

Soundcheck: Gun Or Run, Cracker (both Partial) Set: Intro, Camera, My Flash On You, Gun Or Run, Cracker, Bossa Nova Tune Up Jam, Old Tattoo, A Thing Called Love, Too Much, Mind Garage, Surrender Encore: Little Red Rooster
The 50th Brotherhood show! Tonight the Brotherhood rocks a huge summerfest of the local arts college. The concert takes place in the cafeteria of the college and about 300 people attend. Upon soundcheck time Kiryk notices that he forgot to bring all of his effects and pedals that’s why he can be heard sounding rather naked tonight, particularly the absence of the Fuzz is most notable. Due to some chaotic organisation Brotherhood are forced to play one hour behind schedule (30 minutes past midnight) as well as to cut the set short to make room for the DJs/Soundsystems afterwards. However, the late hour always bodes well for a Dance Concert and since the band opts to play a brief energetic explosion of a set it doesn’t take long until everybody in the huge room dances and moves. Kiryk breaks a string in “Old tattoo” so he has to change the guitar which the band accompanies with their usual little tune up jam which positively amuses the audience but interrupts the momentum of the show slightly. Due to the fairly standard charakter of the set “Too much”, debuted the previous night, is the definite highlight. It proves to be a real dance-floor hit because it gets the crowd going hard. A song already on the way towards a great Brotherhood classic! The encore “Little red rooster” has the brief slow blues intro again and then features blistering classic rock guitar by Kiryk during the solo. While not nearly as magic as the very night before at Mokum this is a rocking late night party show proving that the Brotherhood is most certainly the best choice for any party!

Warehouse
Berlin
Germany

Set: Intro, Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, The drifter, No mercy on ravers, Lifetime, Soma shop, Last song about you
A private birthday party at a warehouse in Berlin-Marzahn. With Chris on bass (compare Luckenwalde 22.06.2007). Showtime 1:15 am – at this point after Vibravoids heavy acid-space only a handful of people are left to watch the Brotherhood. Nevertheless the band manages to make six people dance at least. However, due to the very sparse audience Brotherhood plays a comparetively tame and uneventful concert that pleases musically with a set comprised of standard selections in slightly different sound due to Chris’ playing. During “The drifter” Erik’s organ drops out completely due to a broken d/I-box. The jam comes down to a halt almost, at some point only Lars and Chris play a groove while Erik, Kiryk and a technician try to fix it. Kiryk then opts to play a solo during which Erik’s organ comes back and they start to model the jam anew: in unusal fashion they extend the song significantly after they vocal coda, they go in full jam mode again and let Kiryk explore some themes with a blistering guitar for quite a while. "Soma shop" features a different intro again, very much like Luckenwalde 22.06.2007. Apart from two freakily dancing girls the crowd is almost dead by the end of the set that’s why they cut it short and omit “Mind garage” and “Little red rooster” that were on the setlist

Intersoup
Berlin
Germany

Set: Jam -> Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Mind garage, No mercy on ravers, Last song about you, Lifetime, Soma shop, Too much, Little red rooster, Surrender Encore: Great Fool’s Dad -> Jam -> Mind garage reprise -> Better hurry
Another cosy little show in a mini venue: Prenzlauer Berg’s Intersoup is an alternatively stylish 70s retro bar/café specialising in cocktails, soups and occasional DJ/concert events. A very narrow staircase leads into the basement where the concert room with a capacity of 70 people is situated. The ceiling is very low, just barely above Erik’s head. The walls are flanked with couches and chairs creating an intimate and comfortable atmosphere. With 55 people crammed into the room it gets very hot, sweaty and airless very soon as the band rocks through the set. They open with four minutes slow psychedelic work-out before they say hi and launch “Camera”. Already after the very first tunes it becomes obvious that the club’s mini PA-system cannot provide sufficient sound which unsettles the band and inhibites that they take off completely. Though people are dancing in the first rows this is not a full blown Dance Concert, something is missing on both sides, in the band’s performance as well as in the audience’s reaction and attitude. Particularly Kiryk is notably less animated than usual, his trademark “Yeah, yeah, yeah” stage banter antics are missing tonight. However, this doesn’t mean that the people do not enjoy themselves: the proven first part of the setlist up to “Mind garage” surely gets the people going with cheering during “The cracker”, freaky dancing during “Love” as well as generally having a good time. Slight technical troubles continue throughout the show, the vocal sounds significantly worsens as the set progresses and Kiryk occasionally flubs lyrics as well as one or two guitar parts. The absence of “The drifter” from the set is very notable and gives the performance a different flow and character. “Mind garage”, normally a set closer, feels a bity oddly placed in the middle and there is a little energy-hole in the set created by “No mercy” through “Lifetime” afterwards. Kiryk jokingly comments Erik’s intro to “No mercy” with “...jetzt kommen wir zum christlichen Teil der Veranstaltung”. „Lifetime“, which has gotten comparetively rare in the most recent shows, feels good. „Soma shop“ features yet another new mini-intro. The 16 minute long encore jam starts out with a new, never before performed instrumental number called “Great Fool’s Dad” (the setlist puts it as “Quiet jam”). As the tittle reveals this is a Dead-influenced, very quiet, beautiful and dreamy Kiryk-piece that merges the melodies of the two Dead songs “Cryptical envelopment” and “New potate caboose” off of the Dead’s second album “Anthem of the sun” (1968). The song had been demoed by Kiryk before and its debut tonight makes for a genuine highlight-moment! After five minutes the jam leaves the Dead-part and is being built up and accelerated systematicly to a hard rocking and fast vibe, featurering a blistering and swinging “Mind garage”-reprise as well as hints to “Better hurry”. Now however, during the transitions, the band’s playing is not exactly smooth in some places, there are some ragged points when Kiryk gives them nods and cues. Generally the post-“Great Fool’s Dad”-parts of this jam are a bit too much designed, missing an instinctive surenesss and free flow. Eventually the jam segues into a proper “Better hurry” which features just the drum segment in the middle part. Although played under similiar circumstances as the Mokum show two weeks ago (13.07.2007) the Brotherhood plays just a solid concert tonight missing the magic X-factor to make it ultimately sublime and make everyone drop out completely.

ORWOhaus Festival
Berlin
Germany

Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Mind garage, Last song about you, Too much
The multi-story building Orwohaus located in Berlin-Mahrzahn is a huge “music factory” providing rehearsal rooms, studios, clubs and support for 600 musicians in 160 bands. The non-commercial association running the building managed to make the city rechristen their street from “Street 13” to “Frank-Zappa-Str.” and today’s festival celebrates the renaming of the street. 16 Berlin underground bands from the all genres perfom on two stages, many of them from the ORWOhaus itself. Brotherhood are scheduled for the open air stage at 7 pm. Right on time for their performance some slight rain starts to pour but the people stay for the concert. The band plays a typical festival set. They perform tightly and professionally and fill the huge stage with their presence. “Too much” strangely ends very abruptly ommiting the last third of the song.

Schokoladen
Berlin
Germany

Soundcheck: Gun or run, Suck it, Surrender, Cracker, Too much Set: Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Mindgarage, No mercy on ravers, Last song about you, Soma shop, Too much, Mimi’s tune, Suck it, Surrender, Little red rooster Encore 1: Better hurry -> Great Fool’s Dead Jam -> Better hurry Encore 2: Can’t remember
Notes: A cool concert featuring a well into it and moving but not freaky dancing crowd. This is the second concert at Schokoladen and the venue fills up well, though not to capacity. “Lifetime” was on the setlist as set opener but not played. Just slightly blemished by minor technical flaws like repeated feedbacks the band plays a hot show heavily based on the Garage material. The tempo of the set is majorly enforced by the three new up-temp selections (“Too much”, “Mimi’s tune”, “Suck it”). Towards the end of the main set an aggressive mosher gets thrown out of the joint by the bouncer which Kiryk comments with “…das sieht ja hier aus wie in Altamont”. An insanely jammed out 20 minute version of “Better hurry”, complete with a beautiful “Great Fool’s Dead”-jam, is tonight’s only jam. The nicely relaxed and appropriately anticlimatic “Can’t remember” finishes the concert.

Kiste
Stuttgart
Germany

Soundcheck: Gun or run, Cracker, very brief instr. jam Set: Lifetime, Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Mindgarage, No mercy on ravers, Last song about you, Soma shop, Bossa Nova tune up jam, Too much, Mimi’s tune, Suck it, Surrender Encore: Little red rooster
Notes: Kiste is a very small jazzclub and bar. Basically there is just one room where the bar is the one side and the stage on the other. The venue’s big windows to the street are open, so that the concert can be watched and listened to from the street outside. Unfortunately just 15 people go inside to check out the band from up close. The sound is very good and the band is in good spirits but it is impossible to create a concert atmosphere with so few people and no-one dances. Consequently Brotherhood performs a competently played, mildly engaged but unremarkable standard set interrupted by only very little stage banter. In the end they replace the actual encore on the setlist “Better hurry” with “Little red rooster” in order to cut this relatively awkward concert-situation short. Because they played for the “door” tonight they earn just fifty bucks but the bros take it lightly and party a bit in the Stuttgart night…

Römersee Festival, Villa Rustica
Bad Rappenau
Germany

Soundcheck: Kicksville (just half of the first verse) Set: Noise -> Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Mindgarage -> The drifter, No mercy on ravers, Last song about you, Soma shop, Too much, Mimi’s tune, Suck it, Surrender, Little red rooster Encore: Better hurry
Notes: This weekend’s only proper concert is a fun open air show at the small and free festival Römersee Festival near Heilbronn. The festival takes place out on the countryside on the site of an ancient Roman estate called Villa Rustica. Archeological excavations are spread over the festival grounds and the people sit on the foundation walls of an old Roman mansion. There is a very small nearby lake called “Römersee” that once belonged to the Roman estate – a very idyllic setting! A beautifully clear and sunny summer day draws a decent crowd of ca. 600 local kids to the festival which features an eclectic program on two stages that finds Brotherhood sharing the bill with Stoner Rock, Ska and Gothic bands. Scheduled as the day’s headliner on the main stage the band performs at 23:45. The underage attendees have to leave at midnight that’s why Brotherhood’s performance is not as well attended as the Ska band’s Tequila Terminators before them but a nice party crowd gathers in front of the stage anyway. You can immediately tell the band is in the mood to deliver once they kick off their set with a bang of heavy noise with Kiryk neatly posing with his wine bottle using it as a slide to create feedback. The proven first part of the set from “Camera” through “Old tattoo” gets the crowd seriously into the fun before the show enters space with a great “Mind garage” into “Drifter”-segue. “The Drifter”, not performed for a month (since Berlin-Marzahn 20.07.2007), is being put spontaneously on the setlist and it seems as if its comperatively long absence from the setlists injects new life into the tune: this 13 minute version features an alternate intro and the jam finds Kiryk performing and posing very inspiredly and lively with a few nods to Jimi Hendrix’ moves. Jan also rocks out greatly tonight using his space on the stage by moving around a lot. The crowd acknowledges the great jam with oblivious dancing and eventually in the second half of the set the kids repeatedly jump on the stage to dance and freak out up there. Kiryk dedicates “Last song about you” to “…alle Ladies und alle Typen, die sich fühlen wie Ladies”. Before „Too much“ Kiryk mentions that this is a new song and that the people should excuse possible fuck ups but he adds: „…aber das ist bei unserer Musik sowieso scheißegal”! The on-stage dancing continues throughout the set and there is some more crazy audience interaction when Kiryk gives the people the mic asking if they want to say something and the kids scream “Zugabe” and “Rock and roll” into it before the band rocks them with the last few high tempo blasts of their set. A great classic rendition of „Better hurry“ as encore turns into a near-20 minute jamfest featuring extended wild and funky uptempo soloing by Kiryk as well as deep organ-drones by Erik. During the long drum solo Erik and Kiryk first do a freestyle dance and then they perform their regular dance. A girl who has already been dancing on the edge of the stage for a couple of numbers suddenly takes Kiryk’s hands and leads him into a cute dance. Kiryk asks for her name and then introduces her to the crowd as "Mona, Mona, Mona”. After the drum solo the band goes back into the finish of the song without Kiryk because he misses it but he joins them a little later and leads them into yet another jam that takes off with a brief quote of the “Mountain jam”-theme by the Allman Brothers Band. Ultimately the band wraps up the tune with a giant noisy feedback successfully bringing down the (Roman) house! On the setlist as opener but not played: “Lifetime”.

Rothenberghaus
Schnaittach
Germany

Soundcheck: Gun or run jam Set: Camera, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Mindgarage, Last song about you, Too much, Mimi’s tune, Suck it, Tune up jam, Surrender, Little red rooster + after show session

Jungfer
Arnstadt
Germany

Soundcheck: Jam, Invisible people (partial), Evil talking (full), Jam -> Gun or run (partial), Psychosis (partial), Suck it Set: Intro -> Old tattoo, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, The golden road to unlimited devotion, Suck it, Are you a boy or are you a girl?, Evil talking, Degeneration, Too much, Intro jam -> Mimi’s tune, Mind garage, (Guitar Intro->)Psychosis, Invisible people, Can’t remember, Mind machine
Notes: Rockkneipe Jungfer is in the middle of nowhere. AC/DC and Black Sabbath coverbands are extremely big in the small town of Arnstadt, Germany’s oldest certified town, founded in 704! The venue is decorated with posters of no-name has been rockstars who find their last home here. Since neither of the bands tonight is a coverband no-one shows up for the show but both bands take it lightly and with humour performing very private sets in a relaxed manner. The Hood plays a set that is notable for a lot of experimentation and flower power vibes. “Evil talking” returns to a setlist for the very first time since Hamburg 30.09.2006! They also debut an alternative arrangement of “Mind garage”: there is no organ and no guitar until they kick it off with the instrumental part, a strange effect that gives the vocals an a-capella feel and much more impact. The experiment would be repeated the next night. The rest of the experience is terrible: a giant mountian of raw meat plus a few slices of mildewed cheese is the disgusting catering. The fucked up owner drinks himself to oblivion after the bands' sets all the while listening to old Deep Purple recordings at deafening volume (actually louder than the concert) until dawn not caring about the musicians the slightest bit and getting rude almost on the verge to being violent when approached for something like the fee or sleeping places. A creepy night making the brothers flee Arnstadt early next morning swearing they would never come back to this region, after all Jena and Weimar are very close!

Swamp Room Mania, Kafe Kult
Muenchen
Germany

Soundcheck: brief Gun or run instr.-jam Set: Intro -> Old tattoo, My flash on you, Gun or run, Camera, A thing called love, Psychosis, Invisible people, Too much, Mind garage, Mind machine, Suck it, Little red rooster
Notes: Swamp Room Mania is the Swamp Room Happening’s little festival sister. Curated and organised by Stefan Koglek of Colour Haze the focus of this one day festival tends towards Stoner-influenced band from Stefan’s very own Elektrohasch label roster. Scheduled between Fuzz Manta and Colour Haze the Brotherhood is of course the one exotic band on the bill. They perform in the smaller room of the two with a capacity of 100 people and around 70 attend. Showtime 7:30 pm. Similar to previous important festival gigs like the Swamp Room Happening or the Sauzipf Festival the brothers kick it from the word go. The opening with a charged version of “Old tattoo” makes it immediately clear that they take no prisoners today! Particularly Lars works like an animal drumming like a possessed man. “Mind garage” is played in the new experimental arrangement just as the previous night. The cowd likes it and honours the Brotherhood’s power with dancing and cheering. A powerful and ass-kicking festival set!

Linse Ballroom
Berlin
Germany

Porno -> Old tattoo, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Camera, A thing called love, Mind garage, Psychosis, Invisible people -> Mind machine, Last song about you, Are you a boy or are you a girl?, The golden road to unlimited devotion, Suck it, Mimi’s tune, Surrender

Zosch
Berlin
Germany

Soundcheck: Gun or run jam, Lifetime Set:Porno intro -> Old tattoo, My flash on you, Gun or run, Camera, Cracker, A thing called love, Mind garage, Psychosis, Invisible people -> Mind machine, Last song about you, Soma shop, Too much, Suck it, Mimi’s tune, Surrender Encore: No mercy on ravers, Little red rooster (setlist to be confirmed)
Notes: Already Brotherhood’s third performance at Zosch, a cosy, early 90s alternative Cavern-club like venue in Berlin Mitte. This time around Brotherhood is being supported by a cool blues rock band from Canada, The Perpetrators. A crowd of 75 gathers for the show filling up the Zosch solidely but not to capacity, there is still a lot space left in the back. While relatively decent in numbers the crowd generally leaves something to desire regarding party and freaking out: they used to dance harder and more engagedly in previous shows and there are some talkers in the audience but of course the majority of the crowd seemingly digs the show. The brother’s performance tonight is great if a bit mixed. Without a setlist they play a cool selection of their active repertoire. Great garage sound! There are some moments of true brilliance, like really supertight renditions of the fast numbers (“Old tattoo” through “Cracker” in particular, plus “Mimi’s tune” & “Suck it”) or a psychedelic “Mind garage”. But there are also some unexcusable moments when they fuck up majorly, e.g. the transition to the swing part in “Mind garage” or the solo in “Invsible people”. During “Love” five kids come up and establish an on-stage dance floor for the entire song, which makes the rest of the people cheer loudly. After “Mind machine” something breaks which forces the band to briefly jam upon the porno jam, which Kiryk announces as “kurze Werbepause”. He then proceeds to rap over the jam: “Hey, im dritten Stock in unserer Fleischabteilung: Mettwurst für 3,95. Beachten sie auch unsere Extraangebote im dritten Stock: [?] nur 91,65 EUR. Und weiter geht’s!“. After „Mimi’s tune“ Kiryk requests that “Jeder zieht jetzt ein Teil aus!“. The encore brings two surprises: First up is a high-speed version of “No mercy” that rocks incredibly, the fastest version of the tune they have ever played! Then the band debuts a new version of “Little red rooster” which features the same basic track as the Willie Dixon number but has new vocals and lyrics which they wrote themselves. This new vocal arrangement gives the tune a totally different character and while it misses the primitive energy of the orginal it makes for an interesting new twist in the band’s set.

Frannz Club
Berlin
Germany

Soundcheck: Gun or run, Camera, Cracker (all partial) Set: Porno intro -> Old tattoo, My flash on you, Gun or run, Cracker, Mind Garage, Camera, Invisible people -> Mind machine, Psychosis, Soma shop, Last song about you, Too much, Suck it, Surrender
Tonight Brotherhood plays the “Local Scene”, a concert series that puts three “Berlin newcomer” bands on one bill every fourth Tuesday a month. Sideburn Club & Laid play heavy Indie Rock making Brotherhood yet again the exotic fresh breeze genre-wise in the line up; they play second at 10:30 pm. Frannz club is a 300 capacity major venue and it offers great stage, sound and lights which allows Brotherhood to stage an amazing and most importantly genuinely professional show. And oh shit, tonight is really hot and super tight! Without further ado or much stage banter they rock through the brilliant set with devotion, energy and delight in playing. They manage to nail every tune! Kiryk briefly offers ironic insights to “The Cracker” by introducing it with “Der nächste Song ist über meinen Keks…”. With intense guitar work “Mind garage” opens the gates to swirling psychedelia and on the next three songs the boys truly peak: one of the best versions ever of “Camera” grooves insanely before the next two songs, “Invisible people” followed by “Mind machine”, go even deeper into mindblowing Brotherhood space. The band burns on the two numbers which would be virtuously bridged together with picture perfect feedback and noise -- what versions and what a segue, wow! Kiryk appropriately lights up a cigarette before the next selection and comments it with “Jeder von Euch hatte schon mal eine Psychose…”. More perfect versions of Brotherhood hits follow, as often before “Too much” and “Suck it” stand out a bit. The young and fairly straight audience enjoys the set making this concert an enjoyable experience despite the sparse crowd. Due to the professionality of circumstances as well as an overwhelming tightness exhibited tonight this concert was certainly a must-see for any companion, of whom a couple indeed did attend. Perfect Brotherhood!
