John Hartford Stringband and The Ill-Mo Boys Feb. 26, 2000 The Studios of KDHX 88.1 FM 3504 Magnolia Avenue, St. Louis, MO John Hartford and the Ill-Mo Boys Down Yonder Fiddle Jam & The Duck Room @ Blueberry Hill - St. Louis MO this is 3 cds total John Hartford and The Hartford Stringband - John Hartford: fiddle, vocals, and general silliness - Mike Compton: mandolin - Bob Carlin: clawhammer banjo - Chris Sharp: guitar, vocal on "I've Got the Hungries..." - Larry Perkins: bass, banjo on "Sally Goodwin" The Ill-Mo Boys - Geoff Seitz: fiddle - Jim Nelson, guitar, vocal on "I'm Rollin' On" - Curtis Buckhannon: mandolin Special Guests: The Lodge Brothers - Wayne Schell: fiddle, bass on "Sally Goodwin" - Keith Dudding: mandolin, host of "Down Yonder" - Rob Stinehart: engineer Special guest: Gene Roberts, host of "Country Function and Bluegrass Junction," a friend of John's for a long time, and a legend in St. Louis country and bluegrass radio circles. "Knockin' at Your Door" (not "Texas Gals") comes from the fiddling of Walter Alexander of Leasburg MO. "Tie Hacker No. 1" (earlier called "Tiehacker Breakdown") comes from the playing of Nile Wilson. "The Reel of Icy Doon" is the closest I can come to spelling the title of the French-Canadian tune John and his band play at the end of the first hour, a tune they also refer to as "The Reel of Iceberg Lettuce." On most of the ensemble tunes, Wayne Schell was playing fiddle in the background along with Paddy Keller. The only ones where Wayne stepped up to the mike to play triple fiddles with John and Geoff were "Jawbone" and "The Squirrel Hunters," both of which he learned from listening to John's recordings. For the record, I pretty much stuck to chopping rhythmn in the background (wisely, I think). I first met John Hartford on Saturday, February 26, 1994, when he appeared solo on my show. Here, six years later -- to the day -- it was my honor and a true pleasure to have him back in the studio with his band and the best damn stringband in St. Louis, the Ill-Mo Boys. That my little trio, the Lodge Brothers, could be involved made the occasion even more special. Keith Dudding ~ KeithDudding@Yahoo.com
