Joachim Cooder is the son of the renowned Ry Cooder. He was born in 1978 in Santa Monica, California. Inspired by drummer Jim Keltner,he began playing the drum set at the age of five. Since then he has participated in live performances and film scores and numerous recordings, notably Buena Vista Social Club in 1996 and BVSC presents Ibrahim Ferrer in 1998. Joachim studied world percussion at California Institute of the Arts where he formed "Radio Bemba," now a full time band featuring classic and original Latin music. Their first record "En Frequencia" was to be released on Perro Verde records, but for various reasons, it never was.
