The Art Of Tripping
Channel 4 BBC
England

As you may know, Storm Thorgerson - a complete genius - has created a number of films in his career. One of these is The Art Of Tripping (2 parts - 50 mins each) (made for Channel 4 in 1993). In this documentary, Mr. Thorgerson addresses the question of whether recreational drugs help or hinder the artistic process. This is done by interviewing biographers, relatives, friends, and (helpfully) in some cases, the artists themselves. Remember, this was done in 1993 - before the deaths of Ken Kesey, Tim Leary, and others as well. The soundtrack music was done by ... Mr. David Gilmour! We were able to share the second part of this documentary (1950-1993) a few months ago.. But, honestly, it was from a pretty dodgy source VHS. I thought that the historical value of the film outweighed the generally poor quality. Happily enough, recently a wonderfully kind gentleman named Christoph Watz came forward and volunteered his original VHS of BOTH parts of the documentary! It's a serious step forward in picture quality! It's got the missing first half!
