Live Fast Die Young

Episode 1 and 2 The first part of Live Fast Die Young, a new series presented exclusively for Smooth Radio by Paul Gambaccini. Being a rock star is a dangerous game and throughout this six part series we'll delve into the numerous perils of pop stardom and the various hazards that go hand in hand with being a famous musician. Whether it's through drink, drugs, suicide or dangerous travel, many iconic rock stars have died at a very young age. And we start with two episodes looking at the fateful members of ‘The 27 Club'; stars who were extraordinarily talented and who helped to change the rock and roll landscape forever but all burnt out at the age of 27. _____________________________________________________________________________ Episode 3 This week we'll be investigating the lives of musicians who became ensnared by the cult of over-indulgence. Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Tim Buckley and Gram Parsons all thought a pop star's body could tolerate more than an ordinary man or woman and all met a sticky end due to their wild living. And we talk exclusively to Hollywood actor Mike Myers who is soon to play Keith Moon in a brand new film about The Who drummer. _____________________________________________________________________________ Episode 4 For most musicians life on the road is one of constant partying where drink, drugs and sex are handed out on a plate. But the consequences of this lifestyle can be devastating. This week we're looking at the cult of over indulgence and artists such as Hank Williams, John Bonham and Nick Drake whose wild living brought them to a sticky end. We'll discover how they found the pressure of the music business too much to bear and we'll hear how each of these stars turned to drugs and alcohol and pushed the limits of their existence to breaking point. _____________________________________________________________________________ Episode 5 From Concorde to Cadillac, modern technology means that getting from A to B can now be done in style and being a rock star involves a lifetime of fast travel. Jetting around the world from one gig to the next means that fast cars and private jets are one of the many trappings of the rock and roll life - but they come with a heavy cost. Dangerous travel has claimed the lives of many of our favourite musical icons. This week we'll be paying tribute to Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Mark Bolan who all died due to dangerous travel. _____________________________________________________________________________ Episode 6 Over the last 6 weeks Paul Gambaccini has looked at the numerous occupational hazards faced by young pop stars in Smooth Radio's series Live Fast Die Young. As much as over indulgence and dangerous travel are the most common reasons for an early rock and roll death there are also those musicians whose early passing was down to violent or accidental and unpredictable events. Finally, this week we'll hear about the rise and fall of Joy Division lead-singer Ian Curtis and Motown beauty Tammi Terrell. Plus we hear how Karen Carpenter's struggle with an eating disorder eventually lead to her death
