I believe this transfer to be an upgrade. I'll attach a sample for y'all to check out.

Here's the story.

I got this show on cassette more than 25 years ago. I believe that it was recorded by Deadheads who really knew what they were doing. I recently made a digital transfer, and it sounds amazing (IMHO). I don't know the exact lineage, but it is very low gen, and having resided on cassette all this time, no digitally lossy generations have been introduced. The only evidence of anything missing is the very beginning of "Jamming," (a tape flip?) and I can't remember if this is common to all versions (I assume that all versions originated with the same audience source). I haven't recently listened to the version that circulates from the Bob Fried DAT, but my recollection is that my source generally sounds better and cleaner, plus there is a stretch in the DAT sourced version where all the highs disappear for several tracks. Also, some of the other circulating versions are off pitch. This one is pitch-perfect. I tracked it for a single disc with an overburn, but if you wanted to split into two discs, the logical place is between "No Woman No Cry" and "Jamming," since there seems to be a tape flip at the beginning of "Jamming" in any case.

This source has often been confused for a soundboard, and you could excuse the mistake. This is one of the best audience recordings I've ever heard (and I've heard a few). It's also a tribute to Dennis Thompson (or whoever was mixing the sound at the time), because clearly it sounded great at the venue. You can hear the "creaky" sound as the taper adjusts the mic pole at various times in the first few minutes, until about 4:15 into "Positive Vibration" when the pole is extended into its final position, and the bass response receives a noticeable boost.

This is one of my absolute favorite Bob performances, and as already noted, a very nice recording. As a total fanatic for Bob's studio work, and even having seen him perform, I didn't totally "get it" until I heard this recording in 1979 or so.
I came to truly appreciate Al Anderson's phenomenal chops, Fams' killer bass sound, Wia's roots comping, and not to forget
the sublime grooves of the greatest drummer who ever lived . . . our man Carly.

Hope y'all enjoy. Check out the mp3 sample below.

To be seeded in the near future: I also have another heretofore uncirculated BMW show -- it's a first gen audience of the early show in Vancouver on 07-14-78. It's not the greatest quality, but like repatriation . . . it's a must!
