Noteworthy Dark Stars

This is a collection of noteworthy versions of Dark Star played by the Grateful Dead. It is very closely based on a list put together by Eric Wybenga and published in his book _Dead To The Core: An Almanac of the Grateful Dead_. Five of Eric\'s recommendations have been released commercially. In one case (69-11-08) we also have an AUD, so I\'ve used it here. In the other cases, in order to maintain the broad historic context of the collection, I have replaced the commercially released Dark Stars (69-02-27, 69-03-01, 70-02-13, 71-10-31, 74-10-18) with other noteworthy versions (69-02-21, 69-04-22, 70-06-24, 74-02-24, 74-07-25) that seem to be played out of similar contexts. I would never argue that the replacements are \"as good as\" the comercially released shows. Once you download this, copy in the songs from your commercial discs, and listen to the whole series of Dark Stars as Eric intended. Meanwhile, given what we have to work with here, these Dark Stars I offer you are not bad ;) Feedback as to what you make of my decisions is welcomed!

The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs included in the track. In each case, the music in these tracks is exactly the same as the music from the source indicated by the SHNID. I joined the songs into jams using \"shntool join\", I trimmed occasional extraneous material from each end of the jam using Nero WaveEditor, I fixed up the resulting wavs using \"shntool fix\", and then I compressed the files using \"flac --best\". I used shntool version 3.0.2 and flac version 1.1.3. I did not add any fades, or fix the levels across sources, or otherwise modify the music.

Sometimes it seems to me that Dark Star lives on its own. Other times, Dark Star is totally intertwined with the songs around it as part of a larger jam. For each of these shows, I have made a decision about what I think is \"part of\" the Dark Star and what is not. Feedback on that choice is also welcomed....
