God Street Wine
Irving Plaza
New York, NY
10/9/1993
Original master recording: Scheops CMC54 -> Sonosax -> Teac DA-P20 -> Denon DTR-80P (digital patch, master @ 16/48);
S1T3 and 4 and S2T18 and 19 were spliced in on the original DAT from Bob Mischka's source: Audio Technica 4051 -> ? -> Denon DTR-80P (digital copy from master).
Both sources were set up in the same location in the venue. The Scheops source that I was originally patched out of had a Sonosax battery death in each set and I spliced the fixes into my recording with tracks from Bob's source soon after the show.
DAT playback: Sony R-500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48)
Scheops source was recorded with Emphasis ON, as I was digitally patched from Geoff Tischman's Teac DAP20, so I mastered those tracks this way:
Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. 24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.2 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization and clap removal and dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.
Audio Technica source was recorded with Emphasis OFF, so I mastered those tracks in isolation this way:
Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter, volume normalization and clap removal and dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

Techincal notes: I closed up 2 subsecond dropouts -- 1 at 8:59.28 in S1T4 which is basically inaudible, and one in S2T9 @ 3:10.16 which is subtly audible. There was also a pre-encore pause in the DAT (as was traditional at the time, just in case the show went long in the encore), which I have closed up.
This was the release party for GSW's live "Who's Driving" CD. The band announces that they're leaving after this for a 6 week tour of the West Coast.
Taper notes:
Wow, I love God Street Wine. These guys were such a good band when they were in existance. Yes, they had those reunion shows a little while ago, and they do these one-off "semi GSW" shows occasionally, but when these guys were a real touring band, they were so strong! Anyway, I so enjoy digging into my archives and pulling out GSW shows that are not circulating.....thus I present BARN118 to you all. I realize that the last GSW BARN series was BARN67 (from 8/26/93, less than 2 months before this show), and that was about 14 months ago! That is far too long to go between GSW releases! At this rate, I'll get the rest of my uncirculated GSW out sometime around 2025!
This show represents GSW truly at the top of their game -- this show is a celebration of the release of their excellent live album "Who's Driving" and since the band is apparently about to take off on a tour of the West Coast, and they had apparently warmed up at a show in Hartford, CT the night before, they are playing like a well-oiled machine here. Seriously, they are amped up and super tight -- the tempos are high and the band NAILS every song. Early on in the show, Lo points out that they are going to play a lot more songs than usual so they were just going to (mostly) shut up and play. And they delivered on their promise in spades!
Some highlights include: the seemingly incongruous transition between Mile By Mile and Wendy which is surprising to hear, but fearlessly played. There is another killer segue between Snake Eyes and Crashing Down. Lo introduces "When She Go" by saying it hadn't "come out in a while" (though they had apparently played it the night before) -- it was my first time hearing it. Dan's bass runs in Crashing Down remind me why I was so impressed by him back then (though he's rarely this flashy and up-front). Imogene is over-the-top incendiary -- I'm amazed my headphones didn't catch on fire when I was listening to it.
Moving onto the 2nd set, Dirty Little Secret is down and dirty funky with thrilling Allman-esque guitar duet runs could give Warren & Derek a run for their money...also easly forgotten that when you have 2 guitarists, they just don't have to trade off playing leads/rhythm -- that they can play TOGETHER and make beautiful music. The semi-rare Brand New Pussycat is infectious -- "Come on baby, lick my fingers and scratch my face", indeed!
Then we get to the deep heart of the show -- The Other Shore -> Taking A Deep Drag -- Wow! Amazing guitar work in both of these numbers, and the semi avant-garde nature of Taking A Deep Drag really fills up the sound of the room at Irving Plaza.
They close things up with an amped up Stone House, led by Dan's funky bass playing.
What a night it was. Classic GSW!
Enjoy!
Scott
