This post is all about freely sharing some great music, spreading the vibe of these bands, increasing sales of their goods and attendance at their shows and having a little fun.

The 2K13 version of The Black Crowes return to Atlanta after a multi year hiatus. Although it had been 2 1/2 years since I heard them close with "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" at the end of two fantastic nights of music at The Tabernacle in 2010, those shows still seem like they happened yesterday. They were that good (the playing), that monumental (close to a combined 7 hours) and carried a sense of semi-implied finality (Say Goodnight To The Bad Guys) that tended to stick
with you. Gotta say I was kinda surprised when new dates were offered by Ol' St. Nick. Oh yeah, and happy.

I'd read the various opinions leading up to my first opportunity to see the band. Seemed that critical observations fell into two main categories - Jackie Greene and the setlist. I'll give my two cents on each.

I figured it would take Jackie some time to get his feet wet and I wasn't surprised to see him catch a little heat in regards to the first string of dates. One thing I've learned about the Robinson brothers - they always manage to deliver no matter who's manning guitar. I remember being a little bummed every time they went thru a guitar change - Jeff Cease > Marc Ford > Audley Freed > Marc Ford > Paul Stacey > Luther Dickinson and now Jackie Greene - only to be ultimately pleased with what each player ended up bringing to the band. I didn't see any of the early shows but I can say Jackie played really well this night. And Rich wasn't afraid to put a load on his shoulders which I see as a good sign of confidence. I look forward to seeing how he evolves at the shows I'll be catching over the next 3 months.

As for the setlist, I think there are probably a couple things involved, especially initially. First, I think it makes sense the setlist was a bit static right off the bat as Jackie was worked into things. How is this starting to change? To the tune of "Let's go out and start the show by playing the first half of "Three Snakes And One Charm" change. I think that says a lot right there. I also think incorporating a revolving semi-core of songs that some more casual fans would consider "hits" is a bit of a conscious decision by the band. At the same time, you're always going to be in for a few surprises like the opening "Three Snakes" set tonight or pulling out something like "Jumping Jack Flash" for the first time in Chicago a few nights before.

Bottom line - meet the new Crowes, same as the old Crowes. And isn't that pretty much what we all want?

The Tabernacle is an impactful environment in which to see a show but I always seem to want a little more from a sound perspective. Check the samples and use
the democratic process. Y'all enjoy.
