OldNeumanntapr Notes-
I was only able to see the Jerry Garcia Band three times, I'm sorry to say, but interestingly enough they were all out doors: Once at Squaw Valley in '91 and twice at the Ventura Fairgrounds; 1992 and this show in '94, a day before my 29th birthday. I remember that I didn't have my own DAT portable yet (I was still using the Sony D6) so my friend Jack in Salt Lake City Fed Ex'd me his Sony TCD-D3 DAT and the Nyquist Omnis, which were a set of custom-loaded microphones in a hat, so I could record this show digitally. I picked up the package at the Fed Ex office at the Santa Maria airport and drove down to the show, taking my other friend Little Jack the dwarf with me. I remember sitting in the cab of my F-150 in the parking lot by the beach trying to figure out how to run the deck before I went into the show because I'd never used the D3 before. There was a guy who walked by, saw me fumbling with the deck and said, 'Pirate radio at its finest!'. I never forgot that! I went up front and found a good spot to record from and watched a great show. I was DEAD Center, about 25 to 30 feet back from the stage. I remember that there were other tapers there but this isn't a show that you see listed much. I wonder why? At the end of the first set Jerry said, 'Try and stay warm out there if you can’, and a guy next to me said, 'Wow, he Talked! He Never talks!' (The fog had rolled in and it was getting cold.) I remember that Jerry and Melvin Seals had really good interplay that night and I was thinking how different the Garcia Band sounded compared with the Dead. Jerry really liked the psychedelic Motown sound! Sadly this was the last time that I would see the Jerry Garcia Band. I recorded the Dead about 50 times between 1986 and '95 but for some reason the money was never there when JGB tickets went on sale. Much sadness. :(
