Spring Tour 1983- Executive Crew grows
Sometime in January I got a a call from my Arizona friend Cliff who offered me to put me up if I came out to the Tempe show in March. After what was surely NOT careful deliberation I made plans to fly out there. I had never flown to a Grateful Dead show making this another GD first which was broken in 1983. Since we wanted to record but knew I had a limited amount of luggage space, we decided I would go out with only the JVC headphone binaural microphones and the deck with RCA patch cords in case a patch became possible. One thing that should be emphasized about these early recordings is the nature of having to sneak all the gear in even though once inside the band rarely said anything and it became de facto allowed.
For this show I recall my friend driving there in a white van filled with 6-7 Deadheads and the parking lot was adjacent/above the field. IF this is the same physical location as the later Compton Terrace Amphitheatre, the venue in 1983 was nothing like that. Only a stage in a field on top of the mesa.I got in with the deck and headed toward the soundboard area finding a guy with some Nakamichi shotguns on a low stand just in front of the board who offered me a patch. I was happy to be set and in a pretty nice location. Until the rain, or the wind or both. The entire first set this spitting rain and gusting wind made it a tough one, especially as most of us had arrived wearing shorts and T shirts in the Arizona spring weather. At the end of the first set Bobby says. "We're going to take a break, dry off our instruments it will be a lot better, you'll like it and so will we"
This recording is a good representation of the typical set-up for the 1983 timeframe. In my opinion it suffers from abit of overmodulation of the mics at the pre-amps; this is a trait which has been often associated with the Nakamichi shotgun style microphones I patched out of. I do no recall the taper or if I met him on later tours. The show was pretty good for the rainy conditions and I would point to the Let it Grow and the Help>Slip>Franklins as performance highlights. The Big RR Blues is a real special rendition! Bobby says they are going to keep up the tempo and they played some more cowboy tunes. All in all this was a fine show and a great warm up to the rest of spring tour.
