The tour story:

Driving from St. Paul to Chicago is not a quick snap of the fingers. It is about 400 miles. However, we had an off day so we meandered through Wisconsin stopping a few times, I think Tom wanted to check out Madison and am not certain if that is included in the stops on our journey. We took rest area baths along with several other heads and wound up hanging at a State Park but not camping per se. We drove into Chicago the day before the show on the 26th and found this place, the Drury Inn, that would let us check in "early" which I think was about 3 PM. As we pulled into the rear of the parking lot after getting our keys this silver/grey car comes pulling in and some heads get out and say hello. Later, we see them in the hallway of the motel as they were two doors down and across the hall. I am relaizing that if we all hadn't shown up the night before the show we may have never met. Another oddity is that the desk clerk asked Tom if he was checking in for Barry Manilow who was playing Poplar Creek that night, one day before the Dead; Tom said no.

We realized where the other heads' room was because they were taking the furniture from the lounge and setting up their room to be some sort or Peter Max type art installation. So we met Sean Murtha, Gary Steele and 1 or 2 of their Virginia buddies I surely got to know better over the years but can't recall who. Of course, we became instant friends and kept going back and forth from our room to their room hanging, partying and listening to tapes. This is how Sean found out about tapers and apparently was the time he got the jones to be a taper which would become official after Red Rocks 1983. I spent many a time with both Gary and Sean traveling across the United States and have enjoyed almost every minute of it. ;-) Sean became a special friend of mine, brother from another mother so to speak.

Back to June 26th at the Drury Inn. About the same time as the Virginaians were steal-err moving furniture into their room two other persons checked in and wound up in the room next to ours. Eddie Wahba and his girlfriend at the time from Cleveland Ohio introduced themselves after realizing of course we were there for the show. After meeting and talking briefly Eddie realized we were tapers as he had a Marantz Superscope with him but had never used it live and was hoping to get it into the show. If I recall accurately, we never realized he wasn't of the casually sneak in gear mindset yet and found out after the show he had not brought his deck in. So that night we showed him a few ways of how to do it and I still cannot recall whether he did for show 2 or not. As with the Virginians, I spent many a day and night and Dead show with Eddie. He became a dear friend and we spent time together at many a Cleveland show over the years while he would travel to certain East coast venues to hang with us. He came to meet us at SU for the Carrier Dome shows later that year.

Both Eddie and Sean became great tapers, each bringing the passion for live music to their endeavors. Eddie even named his optical business "Eyes of the World". We all spent so much time together on the road and at Sean's and Eddies houses over the years we became like family. At one point Sean and Shelly lived with us in Texas and Sean did Audio Visual installation work with our small company while Shelly was a commercial painter. The two shows were fun, my first shows in Chicago and a nice amphitheater performance but the meeting of Eddie and Sean would wind up being the life highlight for me and Tom. Sean and Gary coined the term Executive Crew which I hope Sean will explain to us.

We had seats in the pavilion beside the soundboard and had the stand set with the Beyers in X-Y and even though it was farther back than we preferred I think the recording is reflective of our environment. Healy was doing his damnedest to get some good sound inside the pavilion and the bass tone was pretty decent for the Beyers. The Sugaree to end the first set was a pleasant surprise and Jerry's vocals were so sweet. The Scarlet > Fire is a deliberate well played rendition with some great interplay between the guitars and keyboards. The Truckin' has a nice spacey interlude with some added Brent brightness and the all blend into the Wheel so sweetly. Bob pushes the end of Good Lovin' early 80's style with his closing rap shouted out instead of whispered. An extended US Blues gave us hope for the next day!

We went back to the motel where we figured out Eddie had not made a recording on this night and if I recall could only listen via headphones. We did, however have three tape decks in one location and Eddie had some blank tapes so several copies of this show and the previous St. Paul were rolled that night and into the next day. This was the first in a long standing tradition of us copying shows right afterward. The furniture was well used and the Virginians painted their room with glow sticks which they broke and flung all over their room. This was the first time I had witnessed this exact type of craziness and the Virginians sure knew how to party which I learned much about from these fine folks.

There was one more night in shytown which was the final night for our summer tour leg one journey. Tom and I didn't know it but the Executive Crew was expanded twofold this date, June 27 1983!
