The tour story:
The closing night of the run. Somehow, we ran into two real orchestra tickets which, once inside, we traded with a nice couple whose seats were exactly 10 feet behind Dan Healy's head, 2 rows behind the soundboard. This show was the final night and the security had gotten on to the stub in ruse and so everyone was left scrambling for tickets and even the counterfeiting wasn't as reliable as the previous two nights (tiredness factor?). So with the nice taping location and more mellow than the other two nights in terem sof being able to leave the seats and such made for a nice experience. In all, this is the show I recall absorbing the quality of the venue. Ken Kesey came out onstage to speak before the show started, and was told to tell a joke. Then after the first encore, Ken came out and thanked many people and then thanked the audience and then the band came back onstage for a second encore and a fitting one- Satisfaction - for the overall tone of stuffiness through out the proceedings. the crowd was appreciative, and even though I didn't see anyone dancing ON the seats, I did see plenty of aisle dancing, and we were grooving in the chairs behind the soundboard.
Overall I recall at the time I was a bit underwhelmed by the setlist selection, the short length of the shows, and something about all us heads being on our "best behavior" just didn't seem to make it into the top tier of my as of then 30 or so (runs of) shows. Certainly looking back on the experience, and listening to the tapes this is borne out. the extremely short first set first night. The laid back drums and space 2 of 3 nights and then just overall they didn't pull out any bust outs aside from Satisfaction, giving us one at the very end. Now, overall, the quality of their playing was pretty consistent all three nights, even tight by Dead standards. I probably had high expectations and for some reason, maybe the ticket hassles, maybe the short shows, maybe just being tired from almost 2 weeks on the road, but that is my main memory and take away of MY overall experience.
The acoustics of the venue were outstanding for sure. The attitude of the staff, production crew and venue was welcoming, and the town of Eugene won a fan in me. I made it back there several times over the years, many of them visiting and not just for shows.
