The tour story:
We met Ken Kesey on the street across from the restaurant we ate breakfast at in Eugene. I would not have know it was him by face, but one of us shouted "Hey Ken" and then as he walked toward us said in a lower voice, "That's Ken Kesey". We were standing in front of Chris' Saab with the D5 on the hood, headphones plugged in and letting some new friends we made in the restaurant listen to the night one recording. So, Ken Kesey walks up, says "Hey fellas", points to the deck and asks me, "Is that Last night?"; I say yes, he asks to listen. We handed him the headphones (He IS/was tall) he took a quick listen, handed the phones back, said it sounded great and engaged us in conversation for a few minutes. I think he actually thanked us for coming to Eugene!
I could probably stop with the story right there now that I think about it 35 years later!
The rest of the story goes as the previous night. Tickets were so hard to find, our counterfeit friends had set up shop big time and were making them look VERY accurate.WE were able to obtain tickets for a couple of us but some of us still resorted to the stub in scam. Which only seemed to work until just before the show started. Once the show started, they must have figured out the scam as they started using a marker to signal a used ticket. This rendered the stub in scam useless but made more determination to make more tickets at Kinkos for night three. I will say in my up til then 3 years being a Deadhead I had never witnessed such a thing. I can't, however, say it was the last time I witnessed such scheming behavior; I observed all sorts of sneaking in scams in the 1990's being a lot vendor.
As for the show and recording I can offer an opinion that this was a nice tight show fitting into the venues curfew and the recording seems to be the most up front of the three nights. The Candyman, Brother Esau sequence is one to pay attention to. I really liked the second set. The song selection would be considered "classic dead" by 1990's standards but in 1983 Touch of Grey and Throwing Stones were relatively new and getting quite the workout in the rotation. The finale of Touch of Grey fades into Samson and Delilah as we were reminded that it was a Sunday and the whole place was singing "If I Had My Way I'd Tear This Old Building Down"! Wonder how that made the architects of the brand new performance space feel. The rest of the set is strong, I like the Wharf Rat with Jerry doing nice vocals and sweet solo runs with the crowd so quiet in this fine acoustic space. A rousing Sugar Mags and Brokedown to send us into the Saturday night with a tight curfew making for a somewhat short runtime.
