The tour story:
Night 3 at the Rocks. This was a Thursday and after all the worry about rain outs there was almost no precipitation for these three shows: the weather had been more on the hot side these three days and nights with occasional mountain afternoon clouds indicating someone might be getting rain or hail. Due to getting all our traveling plans together because we would split paths the next day we arrived late this day and were unable to get anyone in line close enough to get the front locations as we did on nights 1 & 2. So we wound up behind the soundboard about 6-8 rows. This does provide a nice acoustic perspective as to how the Beyers were performing with this PA at locations which varied widely from the source (50 or 70 feet away as opposed to this 140 feet). I would say they seem different acoustically in terms of proximity but this recording has some very positive aspects to it which may not be on the two FOB recordings.
The Shakedown Street comes out smokin' with great Jerry guitar leads and some vocal rondo action during the "poke around" section. An unexpected Mama Tried > Big River at the top of the set highlighted more Jerry guitar sweetness. This Ramble On Rose was one of my favorite versions for a long time. The set 1 closing Looks Like Rain > Deal is sailing! I kept this as a car tape copy for years. They threw in an Estimated > Terrapin Station for the lead into drums which added to the beauty of the evening. In my opinion this whole show is a gem from the performance point of view, really fine, relaxed versions of these songs.
I had to leave tour and go back to Syracuse for the start of school. Tom and Chris would go on with our newly reacquainted friend Sean. Tom and I had met Sean in June at Poplar Creek and we had not met back up until the end of this show. Sean had told us he tok a bus from Virginia and was at all 3 shows but could not locate us until after the encore of the third night. Luckily for him, Chris and Tom had an open seat in the Saab and Sean rode with them to the final three shows. This was one of the first instances where we sent equipment without the owner on tour (in this case, my D5 and Beyer microphones). So we packed all the gear up and sent it off with those guys headed to Santa Fe while we drove back to Syracuse. I took the tour tapes home with me so we could start copying them as soon as we got home. We had most of them copied and were subjectively rating them by the time Chris and Tom returned with the Santa Fe and Austin recordings.
