the tour story:
Sean and Chris have told me some of their memories. They showed up and were able to get a room in town which led them to experience Dia de los Muertos or "Day of the Dead" costume exhibit along with a hot air balloon launch that same weekend. The venue was on a mesa outside of town where they had a horserace track. Their were plenty of tickets available and the venue was only about 1/4 sold.
Opening with a Music Never Stopped, one of the few this tour led off the first set which seemed it might get interrupted by rain the clouds building behind the stage able to be seen from miles away over the mesa. Maybe Bobby flubbing the second verse was because he was keeping any eye on the clouds. Jerry led into some strong vocals on TLEO and Big RR blues; he was almost growling out the ending of Big RR. About then the clouds starting getting dark and the crowd could sense a storm about to hit. The complete lack of an awning over the stage turned out to be a bad idea for the crew. A mellow and well harmonized 'Beat it on Down the Line' led toward the China Cat Sunflower. There is a guy in the crowd calling for the China-Rider before they play Minglewood, classic Dead audience! Chris recalled they had to play the "China Cat' fast, then 'I Know You Rider' at double speed as the storm was about to hit. They then took down the mics and ran with the bags to the grandstands where there was enough room for everyone to hide out during the storm. The break between sets was extra long due to waiting out the rain.
The included photos are of the stage after the rain and as the rainbow formed during drums. I know this second set Cunmberland > Playin > China Doll is one of Sean's favorites having heard him play copies of the tapes for so long. The China Doll is SICK! The drums are roaring and includes the emergence of the rainbow over the stage; you can hear the crowd react to the rainbow on the recording. Although short out of space, the GDTRFB has a great tempo to it and I find it groovin'. Someone on LMA claims this is the one and only time the band played 'Cold Rain and Snow' for an encore; no matter, this is a fitting and unusual "solo" version being it typically falls in between two jam sequence tunes.
