the tour story:
The collision of the Maine Syracuse and Virginia contingents became a force of passion starting this day. Since Tom Pinney's home state is Maine and none of us would be taping if it weren't for his energy, passion and innovator of Gonzo taping and later in vending techniques this show held great significance for our crew. Chris and Greg being Tom's great friends the whole thing came together and we showed up in town with gusto. We didn't find out until he showed up unannounced but Sean Murtha would rejoin the crew on this date. The legend is he "Stole" (borrowed) his Mom's car to drive from Virginia to Maine by himself and then found Chris' apartment from an address scrawled on a piece of paper from when they parted company after fall tour. Chris' apartment in Portland was so small he shouldn't have offered, but Chris invited him to stay and Sean says that hanging out with us that weekend including the Worcester shows was how he got fully bitten by the taping bug. The Syracuse crew included Mike, Olvy and Fran, Tom, John Borg all of us driving from Lake Placid to Portland in two cars. Greg was in his month long rental having driven from Lake Placid to Boston to Portland.

The Cumberland County Civic Center is not a large venue and the monkey board laid over the hockey rink was pretty ratty looking but it was a GA show which was always more fun than seated shows in my mind. This would be the second time I was inside CCCC, having been there for the 1982-09-17 show. I have been in that building many times since and always feel the place had great vibes. It was a classic East coast Civic Center style building, made of basic materials and nothing fancy about its facilities, something about the place had solid character. Portland Maine at that time was still a somewhat small banking town serving the ports there and in Bath, plus the fishing, farming and tourist communities in all of Maine. What an incredibly pretty city it was with its lovely trees with fall foliage and the parks and of course the waterfront. The town welcomed the deadheads and I recall we had a late lunch on the water of a boat-like place where I figure lots of seafood was consumed.

This show had more than a few highlights. Very well played first set and some great drums and bass bombs in set 2. Some reviewers claim the Jack Straw > They Love Each Other was special; the Althea and Lazy Lightning stick out for me. The China -> Rider features Brent on some digital sampling keyboards which gave the classic tune an "airy" tone. Estimated > He's Gone was not hurried and had some more keyboard sampling tones by Brent. The crowd was keyed in and it does seem the band responded to the energy of the dancing heads along the circular perimeter of the floor. A long drums and space led into a classic NFA > Peter > Around n around > Sugar Mags; well played but standard fare for this tour. We let out into the crisp autumn night some happy deadheads and some of the Syracuse crew drove home that night. Next up for us after a day off would be 2 shows in Worcester, my first GD shows in that city.
