the tour story:
The Band, The Grateful Dead, Toronto, Canada's Wonderland- why the hell not? This venue was set up to be a blast for deadheads. A water park and theme park with amphitheatre and the show was a benefit for SEVA, Wavy Gravy's charity to combat blindness in India. They titled it "The Third Eyeball". To top that off, they sold these Circle of Gold tickets which got you a "performers reception" with the band after the show. It even had a drink ticket attached to the ticket stub! So of course we got as many Circle of Gold's as GDTS said we could. The venue was spacious and somehow, with New York license plates on my Honda, one Canadian, and several non New Yorkers in our two cars, we made it over the Canadian border without being hassled. Tom, Lynne, and Fran were in my car and Will's car was full as well. If I recall, my Fraternity brothers Phil, Steve and Bob drove up separately as did John Borg in his Audi.
The show was fun but long, especially for me, following the schedule I (and Tom) had been through in the previous 12 days. We started June 9th in Sacramento California, caught the Red Rocks run, drove home starting the 15th. My Girlfriend's birthday was the 18th; more driving was involved to get to her folks in Binghamton and back to Syracuse, then leaving for Canada late night on the 20th. All in my 1984 Honda, I was the main driver of all that distance due to being under 25 and my insurance supposedly wouldn't cover other drivers. So I was so exhausted, I barely made it through the show falling asleep in our chairs during drums. When they all headed to go to the Circle of Gold party I couldn't make it. They left me at my car to sleep. I missed a pretty cool gathering according to Tom then and the internet now. Apparently Bob sang with a local act, Sylvia Tyson, they had on a small bandstand; every GD member except Jerry made it to the reception. As Tom got in the car, he joked he should have kept the gear and taped the party; he then drove us home (insurance company be damned). I was so exhausted I do not recall waking up until we got to our apartment in Syracuse.
The show was fantastic. I'll only cover the Dead's sets, but we did record the Band, which will make it to circulation. The Band were great sounding and both Levon and Rick gave extra thanks to the Grateful Dead and Wavy Gravy for having them on the bill. After a speech by Wavy the Dead came on with a tentative 'Hell in a Bucket', a seriously gorgeous TLEO and basically took the hammer out and nailed the rest of the show. For my money, the 'Beat it on Down the Line' through 'Might as Well' are as good first set fare as 1984 got. After a really pretty, unhurried, rendition of 'Scarlet > Fire' the second set got odd with the addition of a Brent song, Good Time Blues, an unusually placed 'Samson and Delilah' before 'Terrapin Station' and a multi song encore set with all members of The Band. That set included 'New Orleans', 'Big Boss Man' and 'Iko-Iko'. All were having fun on the stage and I recall Phil had a huge smile on his face at that point.
Wavy closed with "We'll See you next time, THESE are the good old days"
