the tour story:
Night two at Cal Expo. This being our first Cal Expo shows, and needing to check out of the room by noon, we spent a bunch of time cruising through the Cal State University campus there in Sacramento. Cal Expo, later named Bill Graham Amphitheatre, was a very small, outdoor venue built like a high school football field with bleachers on the sides and rear. It was pretty run down, or at least not highly maintained at that time. But the vibe of the crowd and the BGP "blue jackets" who came over from the Bay area to work the event put this venue on the top of my list to return to as many times as I could over the years. Such a cool place for the Dead, and a wonderful place to see them work their mojo, as the crowd and vibe carried them through some great shows there.

This night starts off with a spirited 'Feel Like a Stranger'; moreover a MUCH improved sounding PA system was quite noticeable. I'm sure that was due to the sound crew's previous nights fit and starts. We also found a nicer recording location for this one so these tapes came out pretty consistent compared to the previous night. 'They Love Each Other' features a sweet Brent piano jam in the middle with Phil and the boys providing the structure. Jerry lets loose a bouncy solo and the audience vibe was also loose. One could tell it was going to be a nice ride on this Sunday. A nice walk through BIOTDL and 'Dire Wolf' with Jerry's vocals strong but raspy leading up to a beautiful 11 minute 'Bird Song'. The set closers Minglewood and 'Might as Well' were typical but fun.

The second set opened with a mellow vocal intro to China > Rider and contained some nice harmonies during the 'I Know You Rider' Intro. The couplet wound up in a relatively standard place, weaving into 'Samson and Delilah', Bob's way of reminding us all it was a Sunday show. Brent really pulls out the Hammond B3 tones for this rendition; this was the timeframe when he started really stretching out and/or filling in for some of Jerry's sparse periods. This lead into one of the Brent jams, "I Don't Need Love"++ which was only played a handful of times. Truckin' was a bit sloppy toward the ending and Bob led into No Jerry ending with a 'Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away' ending in the now typical Crowd chant at the end. Jerry shows up for 'Brokedown Palace', but it certainly wasn't the best version ever.

++ Funny story about 'I Don't Need Love': I recall sitting in someones van when a dude came by selling T shirts or something and heard the tune playing from the van's speakers: "Man, I don't know what Brent is preaching here; seems like the antithesis of the band's usual 'Good Lovin' motto- maybe they should make it into a more positive tune". After he walked away, someone joked, I wonder what his opinion of 'Never Trust a Woman [Who Wears her Pants too Tight]' is?
