When the Niagara Falls date was announced those of us who live in upstate New York were pleased and amazed, as this would be the one and only time the Dead play Niagara Falls in all their 2300 shows. The Texas contingent joined us with Mike and Kenny Davis in Mike's VW van. Being the fine foodie that he always was he directed us to a Buffalo style wings place in Buffalo before we drove up to Niagara Falls. It was incredible food with about 12 of us partaking of the local delights. The plan was then to go to the falls and be tourists for a while before we hit the parking lot.One memory a lot of us have is that the airplane hangar style building was shaped such that you could climb up on the roof easily via some stairs at the back/top of the building, and of course, many heads were up there partying in waves until security would tell them to go down.
They came out blazing with all guns firing. Jack Straw had some bass booms leading into a fast Direwolf and a Minglewood featuring "these upstate fillies start looking good". Sweet playing, solid vocals by both Jerry and Brent with a lively crowd on a Tuesday night. As we used to say, this one was for the faithful, those who showed up every night even if it was a school night. Jerry was on this night vocally and playing wise. He threw out fine renditions of Row Jimmy and Ramble on Rose as they ended with a short Looks Like Rain average length Deal combo.
Second set was a barn burner beginning with Bobby leading a "take a step back" chant as the GA crowd was crushing each other in the rather tiny airplane hanger type gymnasium. The whole set was fantastic, featuring an extended high energy Help > Slip > Franklins leading to an up tempo version of Women Are Smarter. The Eyes of the World jamming up through drums led to a lenghty space with Black Peter emerging out of space with Jerry's vocals being pretty strong. A solid well played show with the band and fans obviously enjoying the slightly unusual surroundings.
After this show we all drove to Syracuse and those of us who were continuing on tour got ready to head to Philly for a three night run.
