the tour story:
Nassau Coliseum. Hempstead NY. 20 minutes from John Hance's house in Farmingdale. New York diner food. End of spring tour.
Our crews assembled at John's house and as I recall JJ had to work that day, so he left Sean and I "in charge" at his house with 4-5 people there. By the time he got home there were at least a dozen of us gathered all about his house. John kept D cell batteries in his refrigerator! Many tape decks were stacked up, ours and his, making copies of the whole tour up until that date. We really owe JJ our grateful thanks for putting up with so many of us. Through the years of our friendship with him, he gracefully allowed us to invade his home for Nassau Coliseum and Jones Beach H.O.R.D.E. shows. I believe John had excellent seats for this show, Sean and Gary had the 13th row seats and we wound up setting up to record in the first row of the second section.
Feels Like A Stranger starts off with channel drop outs, low levels, gets better. The Friend of the Devil sure changes the mood. In that large arena, they slow things way down for the second song; that takes some chutzpah. Jerry's vocal was sweet and showing less signs of tour weariness than in New Haven. Some beautiful keyboard and guitar soloing intertwining at the bridge such that I give this tune my highlight of the set. Brent does usual B3 kicks in the middle with Bob tearing at our eardrums with some of that raunchy slide guitar playing of his. Birdsong is strong. The sound quality opens up after Cassidy with the sound a bit more up front leading out of the first set with some seriously enjoyable Grateful Dead music.
A short China > Rider, crazy extended jam out of Terrapin which headed into a Brent "Don't Need Love". A wicked space emerges out of the Don't Need Love ashes and it seems the band didn't know which way to go then chose an uptempo energetic Truckin'. Giving way to Stella Blue and Jerry's vocals still holding up for next to last day of tour. The short post drums ended with a Sugar Magnolia with the Dayjob encore urging everyone to "keep your day job Until Your Night Job Pays!". Since at this stage of my life, about to graduate college in two weeks, I had neither type of job; so I was destined to be at the next show to complete my mission of attending every show on this tour.
