the tour story:
Continuing on from Merriweather Post Pavilion up toward the Cleveland area for a new to the Dead venue, Blossom Music Center. Our good friend and taping buddy Eddie Wahba was a Clevelander and of course extremely excited to see the Dead in his backyard. Several of us were going to stay at Eddie's house and Tom and I drove up in my Honda, which by now was getting tour worn. Eddie was excited to have us staying with him at his apartment and we were all excited to hang with him and get to see the band in a new venue. The tape reminded me about the huge clusterfuck at their gates with heavy security, too heavy for the scene, as we missed 2-3 songs on each source. We were in the parking lot early enough and in line well enough ahead of show time for most venues but this being the first ever GD show at the venue made it awful to get through.
The fencing in the back was brand new, you could almost smell the wood odor coming off of it. The grounds were pretty, wooded, and well placed in the country below Cleveland. From my point of view the acoustics inside the pavilion were typical of a wooden roofed clamshell structure; not too reflective, but just enough to offer a little bit of unwanted "room reverb". I think the following year in 1985 most of us recorded from the lawn, but for this show there was still no Official Taping Section (OTS) so we were scattered in the pavilion mostly behind the soundboard area.
The show was fine with the boys in mid tour form, looking and feeling a bit worn but smiles all around onstage. Once the prelims were over, they punched out a 14 minute 'Birdsong' with a sweet mellow jam for our first set mindset. Rolling through into a nice, if a bit truncated 'Music Never Stopped' but the Jerry solo in the middle is soaring with his triplet sweetness, the playback made me smile more than once. Bobby and Jerry were each singing well with Phil's tone being a bit punchy which does not come off clearly on the tape given the distance from the stage. The second set is unusual in its' song placement and fluctuating energy levels inside the drums, space segment. Mickey and Billy were so quiet but persistent during the start of space, leading the guys into a very trippy 'Wheel' and I would say they had the crowd right in their hands, ready for the classic Grateful Dead ending sequence, which featured Bobby's cover duo of Around & Around into Johnny B Goode. That sent us sweaty bunch of deadheads into the newly landscaped parking lot to savor the sights and sounds of summer tour with a Good ol' Grateful Dead version of 'U.S. Blues.' Wave that flag and get ready to drive to Indianapolis kids!
