the tour story:
I have written about the many types of cassettes we tried before we pretty much settled on the Maxell MX tapes as our preferred. On this night I tried an experiment not of different microphones, but different tapes using same mics into my two decks. This comparison was between the Maxell MX Metal and the Sony UCX-S Chrome 90 minute length tapes. Our tape rep at J&R music world had talked me into trying some Sony tapes in the Sony deck. For this night, played back all these years later off the same Nakamichi LX-5 my ears indicated the Sony Chrome to have more brightness in the high end and a touch more presence in the vocals. Thus I used those tapes for this takeoff and presentation. (photo in the .jpg fileset)
I will never forget that moment I walked over the top of the hill at the lawn at Pine Knob Amphitheatre. We had just had a crazy drive from Indianapolis to what folks were calling Detroit, but believe me, Clarkston MI is pretty far from Detroit. 42 miles NorthWest to be exact. We barely made it in time to get parked, grab the gear, and sneak our way through security. The cresting of the hill revealed that steep lawn, which is kind of small compared to other clamshell amphitheatre venues, and the sea of tie dye while I hastily scanned the center lawn area. We found a spot on the base of the lawn, about 20 feet behind the soundboard and set up Tom's Beyer M88's along with 4 decks.
A great night of music began with a mellow 'Iko-Iko', not rushed, and you could tell the boys were in a groove, following the uptempo show the night before. The 'Big River' is my highlight of the set, with a great solo interlude and an almost texas swing tempo jam at the end with Phil comping alongside Jerry. China > Rider had the crowd dancing and smiling then a short stop led to Bob introducing 'Sampson and Delilah' as "This is a Sunday Song". The 'He's Gone' pre drums and 'China Doll' post space each featured sweet vocals from Jerry and the soloing was tender but tight; the boys even did a pretty rondo of "never gonna bring him back; gone, gone, he's gone for good". Phil seemed upfront and bouncy for this set, all in all a fine evening of Grateful Dead. On to Kansas City and the famed Starlight Theater.
