the tour story:
I had to meet my girlfriend, Fran, in Dallas as she had a job interview there preceding our move to Texas in September 1984. So I missed this show, left Tom with Sean and they wound up staying at the Five Seasons, where Tom's uncle had artwork on the walls of the hotel. Apparently his uncle lived close to town, and was an artist of some reknown. The band dedicated the second set to Paul of the Rainbow bus who was one of two persons who had died in a crash on the way to the Kansas City show from Pine Knob. Bobby mentioned it at the start saying "This set is dedicated to the memory of Paul and the Rainbow bus" and before He's Gone, Phil said, "this one's for Paul and the Rainbow bus"
A 'Feel Like a Stranger' opener ripped up the one and only indoor venue on this summer tour. Brent scat sings along with his solo in 'Friend of the Devil' with some fancy electric piano flourishes. Some sweet Jerry soloing on the 'CC Rider' led to a 'Cumberland Blues' and an infrequent but not rare for 1984, 'Beat it on Down the Line' which is my favorite of the first set. You can feel the crowd and the Fourth of July holiday atmosphere although there are relatively few fireworks on the recording as it was an indoor venue. From what I read online, there was quite a fireworks battle after the show in the twin parking garages.
The second set is an absolute barn burner with a 55 minute five song cycle featuring a most tender He's Gone following the aforementioned dedication to Paul and the Rainbow bus. The 'Help > Slip > Franklins' led it off with a bang; check the 'Slipknot!' for some summer 1984 psychedelic weirdness. The 'Far From Me' is one of the finest, mid set versions I can recall hearing; Jerry actually leads Brent into the tune with some fancy triplets starting off sounding like the opening chords to 'Truckin', but leading Brent into taking the lead and pounding away at the keys with that lament- "You are so FAR FROM ME". I titled the two minute jam out of 'He's Gone' as 'heavy jam' as they seemed to not want to head into drums with a thundering attempt by Phil to play Truckin' which had Bobby headed for the backstage needing to rest after the 55 minutes of serious soulful energy they just spent. Post drums is standard but incredibly well played fare with Phil finally goading Bobby onto starting Truckin' but with the very briefest whistle blowing to start off. U.S. Blues wrapped it up as an anticlimactic but expected Fourth of July send off.
