A little background to this recording.  Robert Hunter and David Bromberg played back to back sets this evening and a SBD recording circulated back in the 1980s.  Around 2007, a C(x) copy was digitized and torrented with a lineage of S > ? > CDR(s).  That version notes "extremely low levels" and a variety of cuts, plus some duplicated sections of audio.  https://etreedb.org/shn/153332 and https://etreedb.org/shn/86831.

Based on that 2007 transfer and the tape that this file set came from, it's pretty clear that this is tape #2 of a two-tape deal:  cassette #1 had Robert Hunter's set and the first seven songs of Bromberg's set (the same seven songs that are missing here.)  Cassette #2 is what we have here.  When you look at it all together, the timing and cuts (tape flips) work out pretty well as both shows on a pair of 90 minute cassettes.

This transfer is much closer to the original recording than the 2007 transfer, but it is at least a C(1) because side A ended with Travelin' Man and side B picked up again at the beginning of the song.  That explains, by the way, why there were duplicated sections in the 2007 torrent:  these original cassette tapes were recorded from a reel to reel (maybe) until the tape filled (why waste tape?) and then the next side picked up at the beginning of the song that had just got cut off.  The 2007 torrent notes aren't clear enough to be 100% sure, and I don't have cassette #1 to check, but I'm still pretty sure.

Portions of Moonshiner, Travelin' Man and parts of Diamond Lil were performed off mic, and at times Bromberg would wander the stage to interact with the audience.  Vocal levels therefore varied, and sometimes Bromberg is inaudible.  Efforts have been made to amplify the off-mic portions, especially for the the call and response portions of Moonshiner and Travelin' Man.  But there's only so much you can do with a whole lot of nuthin'.

Bruce Barnum was a Deadhead and an avid taper from the early 1980’s until his death in 2017 at age 48.  Over the years, he taped dozens of Dead shows throughout the Northeast, as well as other concerts, some of which have not been heard since then.  After his death, about 60 of his master cassettes turned up in a used record store in Hudson, NY, where some had been bought by random people nostalgic for the days of cassettes.  The rest were purchased by a fellow Deadhead and archivist.  Bruce’s daughter, Jessica, had more, and was kind enough to lend them to be digitized.  Many of these recordings sound excellent for their age.  They are Bruce's legacy.

Enjoy!
