Thanks to Gene Taback for capturing these performances.

The musicians who performed this evening are unclear.  The tape is labeled "David Grisman Band w/ J.D. Crowe, etc." but that's not quite right.  The July 23 Freemont Argus lists "David Grisman Quintet, J.D. Crowe, Richard Greene," but Gene remembers that only two bands playing, not three. Thus, it would have been J.D. Crowe, Richard Greene, and a backing band (sounds like a dobro, so Jerry Douglas?), followed by David Grisman's ensemble.  There are no stage announcements or other info on the tape to help explain who played when or with whom, though.

Gene also recalls that there were two shows that evening, which the Argus confirms, and if you went to the first one you were invited to stay for the second.  That's why so many songs are repeated.  But there's only so much room on a 90 minute tape, so Gene didn't tape the start of J.D. Crowe's second show or the late show encore (probably).

The first show begins with J.D. Crowe material.  By the time E.M.D. rolls around, it's all Grisman's band, though.  Based on the level of applause after Dawg's Bull, it was probably the encore to the first show, as it was a common encore.

The second show starts in the same way.  About 15 seconds into track 18, you can hear two people discussing how New Camptown Races was the "the same set" as before.  Once again, when E.M.D. rolls around, it's Grisman's band on stage.  So, it seems likely that Crowe and Greene opened for Grisman.

Even if this is all wrong, it's still 90 minutes of great music.

Enjoy!
