12/07/2003 | Lewis/Klitschko | This is a show that needed to be patched, but I gotta say that the unpatched soundboard very prevalent on Furthur is MUCH less hissy/cloudy and more clear than this patched soundboard. Maybe it's from the same material with the levels different, but if the kind gentlemen who worked on this project would compare the two, I think they would find the source on Furthur is the one that needs to be patched. It's actually one of the best soundboards I have from '72. I love it, it's crystal clear, and a patch job on that is #1 on my wish list. I can't be the only one who feels this way.
02/07/2004 | Lewis/Klitschko | Incidentally, I did it myself. Look for the improved version to be vined at morningdew.us
02/08/2004 | cea | I think that the source that is circulating on furthur actually has more tape noise than this seed but the crispness of the music and especially the vocals is also alot better. Maybe this seed has had NR applied.

You could very well be correct. Certainly there are a few other shows that sacrifice crispness for less hiss, or a higher hiss level for better clarity. I'm thinking of the alternative sources of 10/25/73, 10/30/73, and 11/17/73. It may also be the levels or some such technical thing, and nothing to do with amount of cassette generations. In the case of 10/25, 10/30, and 11/17/72 (if that's the case with this one), I prefer the extra-crispiness. I prefer the 11/17/73 less-hiss version (supposedly muddier), so I guess it's a case by case basis. The Further 11/17/72 just sounds so much better, and that's why I embarked on this project. |

See, to me, that one sounded quite a bit worse, so to each his own. Make sure to put your version up on etree so we can check it out. In this case, I think the difference is two separate cass>DAT transfers (from the same cassette source); one made before Dick's passing, the other afterwards (I think). |

Well, I've sent it along to a capable fellow who will soon vine it at morningdew.us I can't believe you think the prior source is better, but whattyagonna do. To me the difference in quality is startling and immediate, but I've asked this fellow to vine it only if he feels this meets the standards. The two patches are on separate tracks because I did this before I learned the "append" feature, but I'm especially proud of the timing I got on the "Other One" patch. Thanks to you, of course, for the source material. |
