08/17/2003 | jeff | The lineage certainly sounds better than it looks, and perhaps there are less gens. This is undoubtedly from the same original source as the Vernon seed, though it is not from those actual shns. This is the best recording I've heard of this show despite some copies appearing to have superior lineages.
01/25/2004 | Dozin | If you were at this show I need you to please contact me
02/06/2004 | Bill | I was at this show--first Dead show at the beautiful Fox Theater in St.Louis--sitting in the first row of the loge balcony--what would you like to know?

I'm trying to confirm what happened at this show and why it is partial. From what I know Owsely got busteded and the equipment truck was impounded. There was no equipment so they called St. Louis music for rental equipment which was Bob Heil (the famous Framton talk box guy) and he provided a PA and stuff. The boys were forced to play accoustic at the edge of the stage until the equipment arrived (Y/N)? The biggest thing about this is Bob Heil showed up with The First JBL System and Soundboard that knocked the socks off the band. Jerry actually hired Bob to do the Fillmore shows. THIS planted the seed for the Wall Of Sound. |

Dozin, I'm trying to track that down for you. I have some friends who did the lights (liquids and such) for the early St. Louis gigs. They may have done this show, too. While I've got you on the line, though, I was wondering if you knew anything at all about the existence and availability of a source for 4/17/69 (Wash U in STL). Eaton's list shows a 103 SBD, but, even though I've been looking for it for years, I've come up empty. I saw in your source list that you had 4/15 and 4/18, so I thought I'd take a shot in the dark. Any help would be appreciated. |

01/14/2006 | Cool Breeze | I just e-mailed Bob Heil and asked him, very politely, for the skinny on this Fox show. If that doesn't work, I'll drive over to his shop and see if I can chat him up. It's only a couple of miles from my house.

The answer may be found here: http://www.gdforum.com/store/music/gdcdvlt2.html They are Harper Barnes' liner notes to Two From The Vault, where he talks about this show, to wit: "The concert was in February of 1970 at a marvelous neo-Babylonian movie theater in St. Louis called the Fox...The concert started about two hours late. The Grateful Dead had been busted for possession of marijuana a couple of days before in New Orleans and the seven tons of equipment that they hauled around the country had been impounded in lieu of bond or something. A lot of it had just arrived and had been too hastily assembled and besides the PA wasn't working very well..." That jives with recollection of my friend who worked on the light show crew: late start, crappy PA. No mention of Heil or good equipment. |

But, on the other hand, there's this, which I came across when looking into something completely unrelated. http://www.heilsound.com/belleville.htm In particular: "In the early 1960s, Heil inherited two huge speakers the Fox Theater was discarding. In 1969, the theater called Heil with a problem. A band was in town, but the FBI had arrested its sound man the night before, after the band's previous gig in New Orleans. He was being held under suspicion for carrying drugs. The band, whom Heil had never heard of, was without amplifiers. The theater manager asked Heil if he would talk to the band leader. That's the night he met Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. It was the start of a musical relationship." Leave it to the News-Democrat to screw up something inconsequential, like the year this all took place. The band didn't play the Fox until the 2/2/70 show. Also, it was the NOPD, not the FBI, that busted the band (and most of the crew, IIRC). |

Mr. Heil graciously responded to my e-mail, saying in part, "I certainly WAS a big part of the Dead's history in those days and in fact have the special mixing console here in my store that was used on many of those shows...!" I'll be talking with him after the 26th, when he gets back from NAMM in LA. I'd like to get a look at that board, too. :) |
