soulrock: But before I jump on this one, could anybody explain to me why this version is better than the pre-fm DAT source? What exactly is better on this source? The preFM sounds flawless to me. I guess this promo source is mixed from the PreFM DAT soundboard. But why exactly is it better? And is it a big upgrade? I wanna know if I should use my bandwith for another definitive version... spacedvest: The main source used for this is the Sony Australian promo. It is the only known source that does not cut at the pre-FM and FM level. To be honest, I have no idea...I wonder if it is a true soundboard, but I don't know. But the fact is it doesn't cut. And if you listen to the Sony promo back-to-back with the pFM source, it just sounds better...the bass is more clear and it sounds much more solid. The pFM source was then applied to make the show complete, because the Sony Australian promo has some cuts. I knew this would come up, and I understand. Really, the best thing you can do is download it, and listen to it yourself. I personally have spent countless hours on this project, as well as Bill, listening to all these sources. I think I listened to this show about 10 times in the last week alone. Anyway, just download it and see, and maybe you can post here and let us know what you think. Leehro: I should add that by "does not cut", he means that the other sources have been filtered, and do not have any frequencies higher than 16KHz or so, when CDs can reproduce frequencies up to 22KHz. The filtering is part of preparing the recording to be broadcast over FM. It's something you look for when you're trying to determine if a recording was MP3 sourced, or maybe FM sourced. soulrock: Thanks to Spacedvest and Leehro for the explanation. So if I'm correct there are 4 sources now: The FM source available on the commercial boots; The Pre FM source which was torrented earlier this year; The Dissident single which is of course incomplete but is professionaly mixed; The Promo cd which is now being torrented and is mixed by unknown... So now I wonder if the promo cd has the same sound as the Dissident single source? Oh well, I will hear it soon enough so you don't have to answer this question. ;-) Leehro: promo CDs have varying sources. i'm not a boot CD historian, but the popular 11/3/96 promos may be preFM, and not true soundboard. in that case, I'd stick with the preFM > DAT > SHN version, strictly because it's a better lineage. But again, i might be wrong. It's always a good idea to investigate things yourself if you're not sure. If you've got a bunch of sources for 11/3/96, compare them! look at a spectral analysis, see what kind of filtering has been done. That's a good way to quantify your findings. Then you can listen to the better sources and try and judge a best. |
