SPECIAL NOTES FROM MIKE MORICONI:
MUD -  The Ali Baba's Tahini reunion took place out doors on the patio of the Niles Riverfront Cafe, Niles Michigan on 9/20/03.  It was the night after the Umphrey's fiasco where the police shut down the show near the beginning of the second set because they said Umphrey's was too loud (even though no decibel meter was used by said law enforcement types).  There was a strange kind of depressing vibe in the air most of the day.  Brian Williams was the organizer of the festival weekend, and he was so upset about the police hassles that he cancelled all the other events for the weekend, and for a while we weren't even sure that the MUD show was going to happen.  We hung out in Niles pretty much all day and then in the end he decided to move the PA system from the Amphitheater across the street to the cafe so as to possibly attract a little less police attention to the one remaining performance.

You can hear some motorcycles once in a while during the show - the patio is on a corner.  They sound nice though - Harley's one and all!  The mic's were placed (tossed up onto) the awning that covered the sound board.  That's right - not even on a tripod of any sort - just laying on the awning.  I was leery about how the recording would come out, so I plugged my DA-P1 into the sound board as a backup, but the soundboard recording was horrible (like really really horrible) and has since been misplaced / taped over / melted / I don't know.  Sound was done by Matt Withers (Mr. Withers) of Ali Baba's Tahini sound from back in the day.

It was a really special evening!  Jake played the entire show (along with Kahlil of course) sitting down.  This gave Karl a prominent spot as the director of energies on stage which was elevated just a couple feet above the crowd.  You can hear the chatter of children - the cafe is an all ages kid-friendly kind of place - which added to the nostalgia of the Ali Baba's Tahini days.  You'll notice that the Lula's shows and Daily Grind shows all have kids present.  They played some standards from the ABT days, but featured Karl's new songs from NC pretty heavily.  Lockspot was a special request from Heather and I as it was always one of our favorite ABT songs.

Brett Paget interjects some of his mental percolations on the scene but did not play his notorious baritone that night.  There were probably only about 100 people or so there - the patio was full, but it's not a huge place - 150 tops.  Word had gotten out that everything had been cancelled, so many of the Chicago phreaks cut out of town long before the MUD show.

Kahlil Smiley on bass - Krojo on drums - Karl Englemann on acoustic guitar, strat, and claw-hammer style banjo (kazoo also), Jake on acoustic guitar and electric.  Brett for some vocals near the end.  Show should be dedicated to the Niles PD - those steadfast enforcers of fascist cultural norms - and to the lucky few who hung around despite the freaky tension filled vibe.  The pay-off was well worth the wait!
