04/07/2001 | Tome | D1T1 Shakedown has a skip @ 4:19, (new d1) | |
01/05/2003 | Bill Frank | It seems that all known SDBs of this show in circulation (as far as I know) have a skip in D1T1 at 4:19 and D1T5 at 2:30. I have not seen any "retransfer" to date that addresses this issue. The other version of this show listed on etree is http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=7692 and it says SBD > GD MASTER DIGITAL MULTI-TRACK > MARIN COUNTY DIGITAL MIXDOWN TO DAT > SSSB. This is bullshit in my opinion. It is obviously sourced from the same flawed ZA2 transfer as all the other ones in circulation. The only other possibility is that the "skips" exist on all circulating DATs. The only difference in this "new" seed is that the skips were "spliced" out by Jay Serafin. Big deal. Anyone can do that with a wav editor, and even track it on sector boundaries properly if they wanted to. The real solution to this would be to get a good DAT tape and retransfer it properly so that there are no skips. I have the original 6/99 first seed of this show on CD, and the skips are presumably due to a buffer underrun error on the ZA2 card, not a problem with the DAT. I take offense to the fact that someone "reseeded" this show, when in fact, the source is exactly the same, and they just used a dirty little trick to splice out the skips. My opinion is don't reseed a show unless there is some real value to doing so. Don't just take a flawed version of the show that is already widely circulated and do nasty things to it and claim it to be a new and improved version from a so-called Marin County source. I think this one falls squarely into the category of BUSTED! Regarding the comment about the newer version being oversaturated, it is. However, the original first seed from 6/99 is also oversaturated, so I suspect that this is a problem with the DAT source. Another tip off that both of these seeds are from the same source, and there is no improvement to be realized in the newer seed. The newer seed is on GDLIVE, which is fine, except in the places where the skips are spliced out, there is also a significant amount of show that is spliced out. I would prefer the version with the skips. For instance, the part at 2:30 on D1T5 that has a skip is in Jerry's verse on Maggie's Farm. The skip version still has the phrase "I ain't gonna work for Maggie's Brother no more" in tact, whereas the newer version of the show has that whole portion completely spliced out. In my humble opinion, not the best way to fix a skip. Yes it makes it less noticable, but I would rather not have words and phrases cut out of a show just to smooth over a flaw in the DAT transfer. |
