This show is a must. In my opinion, it was the last 'GREAT' run of Dead shows ever played, and the 27th was the best of the four. Sure they had their moments after this run but they really lost alot of energy after Bill died. There were great songs, and even really good sets, but the 'magic' that was the Dead never held out for an entire show after this Oakland run. This show was the first played since Bill Graham died in the helicopter crash a couple days earlier. They opened with Sugar Magnolia->Sugaree and did not do the Sunshine Daydream until they closed the Bill Graham Memorial Concert in Golden Gate Park a week later. This show absolutely ROCKED from the very first note. They sent Bill out in a fitting style (Sugar Magnolia was his favorite song). Carlos Santana & Gary Duncan joined in and we were treated to an amazing Aiko-> Mona in the second set before drums. The Knockin' at the end was beautiful and there was not a dry eye in the coliseum. The quality of this recording/shn is wonderful. I highly recommend this download (and the 31st when the whole thing shows up) for anyone who doesn't have it. You won't be disappointed. If anyone disagrees that this was the last GREAT entire show, please email me with your opinion. I'd love to hear about a show after this that holds up to repeated listening. I saw about 70 shows in the next 3.5 years and nothing came even close. I would love to be proven wrong. |

08/24/2000 | V.o.R. | Ed, I couldn't agree more. Fall '91 was the first tour since Brent died that the band really pushed themselves and put on consistently good shows. I think Bruce woke them up for a tour. It was all downhill from 10/91 on. Get the October shows then get the rest of the tour!

Indeed a great show, but I need to complain about the sound quality. Though I have not heard the ETREE'd version, the other DSBD's I've had of this show alwasy sound muffled or muted somehow. Like someone used a heavy Dolby reduction on it. Anyone? |

08/05/2002 | Jay Gerland | This indeed DOES sound incredible. It's worthy to note, I suppose, that it fades in during the beginning of Sugar Mags, just before Bobby starts singing.
09/29/2003 | melissa | I first saw the Dead in '69 and for years my favorite show was Maples at Stanford when the basketball floor rocked the mics on stage. UNTIL OCT 27, 1991. This show stands as my all time most ASTOUNDING there-is-nothing-like-a-Dead-show show. Big speculation before the opening note about how Bill's death would affect the band's tone that night--then they blew the doors off. This Sugaree ought to go in the golden collection. THANKS for getting it here for us. |
