I received these comments recently about this seed and thought others might enjoy the read. Any other reliable info regarding this seed is welcome -Brian "...While I first saw the dead in June of 1969, I have no concrete info on this disc like "I was there" etc. But, whatever that jam is, it is clearly Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy playing, and I bet the harmonica player is Will Scarlett. Hot Tuna did play before the dead on 12-31-70, and those three guys made up that band in those days. The version of Rider (Jorma on vocal) on that disc is also done in Hot Tuna's original 1970 arrangement for that traditional classic tune. So, it is a good chance that it is actually 12-31-70. Whether it's after the dead, or the end of Hot Tuna's set is only another guess!..." |

12/11/2003 | Ratdog | After the end of the Dead's set, Weir and Hot Tuna came out and played a short Jam session. Will Scarlet is said to be the harmonica player. Tunes played are Johnny B. Goode, Around And Around, Rock Me Baby, Not Fade Away, and I Know You Rider (in Jorma's arrangement). This info is from www.deadlists.com |

From time to time I receive comments from this seed so I'm trying to post them as they come in. Here's one from George Minton: I think maybe the little stoner who labelled the tape "after show" may have been correct: this is definitely a jam rather than a regular set, and very well could have taken place _after_ the regular show. First of all, who is it? From the Dead I only hear Bobby. Jorma is definitely in there, that's him singing Rock Me Baby, same arrangement as the Bless Its Pointed Little Head version. I don't know who that fuzzy lead guitar is; I looked up the poster art of this night and it's Cold Blood, Elvin Bishop, Boz Scaggs, Stoneground, New Riders, and the Dead (what a show! and the poster says "breakfast included"). I haven't scrutinized the bass and drumming for style clues, but it doesn't immediately sound like Cassidy or Phil, or Kreutzman or Hart. I guess Joey Covington was already with the Airplane, and I don't know enough about him to give a positive ID. But with all those bands, there are lots of candidates of guys that would be thrilled to say, "Yeah man, Bobby and Jorma were playing late, asked me to sit in..." And Bobby, supposedly "Mr Natural" by then, sounds as absolutely _amped_ as I've ever heard him. That's all circumstantial evidence, the only way to confirm would be to find somebody who was there who has brain cells left remembering the event. But it would sure explain your write-up "there is little to no information regarding this performance - I can't find any evidence of it." |
