Recording notes: I got this from a friend of the taper shortly after the show. I may have made a few analog copies in the 90s, but thats about it. This is the first time Ive transferred this show to a digital format. The taper did a nice job except that there is some microphone jostling from time-to-time, mostly between songs. The first few seconds of Supplication Jam are missing due to the tape flip. There is also about 10 seconds of distortion at the beginning of Supplication Jam due to the age of the tape.

No EQ or additional sound editing has been applied, this is the raw recording. Samples will be posted. A print advertisement clipping scan and ticket stub scan are included. Many thanks to the taper.

Show Notes: This is the complete Bobby & the Midnites portion of the show. There was an opening band, but I cant recall their name. It definitely was not NRPS, who opened some other Bobby & The Midnites shows that year.  As I recall, the crowd at the Orpheum was particularly rowdy on this night, and bringing an opening band on stage was like tossing raw meat to a starving dog. Compounding the issue was the fact that the opener was a second rate blues band, and not very good. The leg kicks and theatrics merely incited the crowd. After the first song, there was basically chatter and a smattering of applause. During the next song, it degenerated to yelling and booing, to the point that by the third song (Shotgun, I think), the crowds jeering was louder than the band. In mid-song, to the chants of Get off the stage, you suck!, the band stopped playing, threw down their instruments, and enthusiastically flipped the audience the bird. They just walked off, having taken enough abuse. To this day, Ive never seen a band booed off the stage like that. When Bobby & the Midnights took the stage, Bobby Cochran shouted to the audience (its not on this tape) You people are crazy! Prior to the encore, Weir references this in a comment to the crowd. Needless to say, this was a great show.

*The Story of The Dusty Box: About 5 years ago, I tossed or gave away all of my cassettes prior to moving. Before leaving about 1500 tapes at the curb for the garbage man (I literally couldn't give 'em away), I stashed about 2 dozen that I feared I might never find in digital form. That box of tapes mysteriously disappeared. On 1/15/2008, the box was found in my basement, covered in dust, hiding behind an old slide projector. There's more to come...
