Comments (from Deadlists with some additional annotations)

General:
- this source is a substantial upgrade in sound quality over the previously circulating version used here as the patch source.  It has a larger dynamic range and significantly less hiss with different omissions, enabling a more complete version of the show to be assembled.

flaws:
- Start of Casey Jones, patch in Morning Dew and all of JBG, UJB and OMSN from previous circulating "prefm" source, which spectral analysis suggests was derived from multiple sources with perhaps some signal processing applied.
- some percussion sounding anomalies in left channel in TJed, referenced in banter after song ends
- Casey Jones patch at start ~ 24 seconds
- Morning Dew cross faded patch ~90 seconds
- d4t04 fades in

(4) Announcer: While the Dead are tuning up a reminder of what's going on in the station tonight. We are broadcasting live from The Winterland a Grateful Dead performance um... sounds like someone else making an announcement... there's nobody to really tell what's happening out there...chaos, Bill Graham has pulled some incredible feats topped all of his performances this New Year's Eve ...more later
(5) Weir: We've got an equipment malfunction.... Take this opportunity to tell you that Pigpen is still out.. He'll probably be back not too long...  Announcer: The Grateful Dead are still having an equipment problem, we might as well tell you some of things that have been going on here this evening here.  Bill Graham apparently has contacted somebody that has perfected the um.. motion picture hologram, you know the holograms that um they are shot with a laser beam and they exist 3 dimensionally in space, you can walk around in back of them.  Well Bill Graham has recreated some of the uh heavies of history uh and has them moving in 3 dimensional images out on the floor. There is King Arthur.  King Arthur has long golden hair and a crown you can recognize him by the sword uhm King Arthur is wearing a raincoat which he is opening now and he's uh naked underneath and is exposing himself to the uh stage. Looks like well we'll tell you some more things.. David Crosby has been seen back stage and will be playing with the Grateful Dead... It is rumored that his father Bing is here and he may come out and and do a father and son duet...back to the Grateful Dead
(6) [Missing on this source]Weir: thank you. We're gonna take a short break and refresh ourselves and invite you to do the same and we'll be back playin for you in just a couple of minutes. After this next song.
(7) Weir: Everybody hang loose and we'll see ya'll in about 15-20 minutes.
(8) Weir: We got a couple of more equipment breakdowns to take care of.... You're hearing the sound of electronic springtime.
(9) {Truckin' [4:52] > Truckin' Jam [4:28] > Other one transition Jam [5:13] > the Other one [10:15] > Drums [3:28] > Bass and Drums [3:07] > Other one [5:45] > Dissonant Space [7:50] > Jam [4:00] > the Other one (First and only verse) [3:10] > Pretty Space [5:39] > Morning Dew}
(10) Weir: We'd like to take a moment to give a warm and hearty thanks to a fine American and a wonderful, wonderful man.  The gentelman that's responsible for this evening's gala festivities, Mr. Bill Graham. And in honor of the occasion we are going to do a song that I think he likes and it goes like this...
(11) Weir: thank you all a

11/16/2003 Joe Samaritano Nice!
11/21/2003 Zeb I was wondering if this source is where the Playin' on the "New Years Eves at Winterland" CD comes from...
it's an excellent bonus disc available when ordering the "Closing of Winterland" CD or DVD directly from the GDStore - highly recommended!

thanks - Zeb
11/23/2003 Matt Vernon I do not know if the sources are the same here as for the "Bonus" disk that comes with the Winterland DVD, though that one fades out at the end.
