SOURCES
SBD #1: SBD> ??> CAS> CD> EAC> WAV. A/D conversion by Steve Milewski via Nak BX300> Tascam CDRW700 standalone audio unit. Extraction by Conley Knott via EAC (logs report peak levels 100%, track quality 100% and no errors). This source is new to etree with this seed.  Supplies set one.

SBD #2: MSR> CAS> LYNXONE 24 Bit A/D Converter> CD> SHN> WAV. First seeded by Marshall Mcleod [etree shn id 301]. Supplies most of set two.

SBD #3: MSC> CAS> DAT> CD-R> EAC> SHN> WAV.  This seems to derive from the same orginal source as SBD #2 but have a different lineage (some distinctive cuts are identical while other cuts appear in different places; also SBD #3 has slightly higher hiss).  First seeded by Art Cohen? [etree shn id 12947].  Supplies one set two patch.

AUD: MAC (believed to be via Nak 300s)> R1> R2> (possibly R3>) DATs> CDRs> EAC> SHN> WAV. A/D conversion by Rob Bertrando, and first seeded by Darrin Sacks [etree shn id 302]. Probably derives from the tape originally recorded by Hugh Barroll. Supplies several set two patches.

All timings are rounded down to the nearest full second.

TRACKING NOTE: Above tracking accommodates 74 minute CDs.  Each set clocks in well under 80 minutes, so those who choose can use two 80 minute CDs, with each set on its own CD.  File names include "s1" and "s2" extensions (set 1 and set 2) to simplify burning to 80 CDs.

EDITING NOTES: Sound Forge XP 4.5 was used for edits as noted below, and to recompile the wavs into a single wav file in preparation for final retracking. CDWav was used to cut tracks along sector boundaries. shntool was used to confirm all wav files were cut on sector boundaries. mkwACT was used to convert shn>wav, wav>shn, and create the md5.

1. Entire first set: reduced pitch by -.566 semitones throughout set one to bring the pitch of SBD #1 within 0.03% of SBD #2 (using the Peggy-O on each source for direct comparison)

2. Half Step: attenuated severe mixing problems by significantly raising amplitude of first ~4.5 secs (which was inaudible on source CD); and lowering amplitude less drastically for the next ~1.5 secs

3. LL Rain: attenuated cassette tape flip @4:55 by splicing the two segments almost flush (no cross fade or overlap). The segment before the splice was unaltered, and the segment after the splice was softened with a short fade-in.

4. tuning: entire track supplied by AUD

5. Jam #1: first ~50 secs patched by AUD

6. Jam #1: 1:26 to 1:52 patched by SBD #3

7. Jam #1: last 0:11 patched by AUD (patch starts @8:02)

8. Drums: entire track supplied by AUD

9. Jam #2: first 0:05 patched by AUD

10. Playin (reprise): last 4:29 patched by AUD (patch starts @1:46)

11. Around: entire track supplied by AUD

KNOWN FLAWS REMAINING: (1) The first 3 notes of Half Step are missing; (2) Distortion is present in first ~4.5 seconds of Half Step, where amplitude was raised as much as possible; (3) Most mix problems were left untouched, and persist through the first two songs of set one [Half Step> Franklin's]. The levels are re-adjusted several times before settling on a satisfactory mix partway through Franklin's; (4) A cut in LL Rain remains at the cassette tape flip.  Probably ~2 seconds are missing.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:  Mahalo to Steve Milewski for answering a stranger's e-mail and supplying SBD #1. Thanks also to Torbj?rn Olofsson [http://tol.etree.org:8888/], to whom an immeasurable debt of gratitude is owed by many.  He provided the shn sets of the SBD #2, SBD #3, and AUD sources.  Finally, thanks to all of the unnamed (and unknown) people who contributed in getting these sources to this point.

Compiled, edited, shn'd and seeded to etree by Conley Knott.

01/17/2004 Jack Warner "Probably derives from the tape originally recorded by Hugh Barroll." >>Not sure where this speculation came from, but it's incorrect. I've compared them, and they're two distinct masters.

Additionally, there is a 3rd aud recording, taped by Scott Jones, which circulates as a digital transcription from his cassette master. It is, to my ears, superior to either of the other two aud tapes mentioned here.
