08/01/2005 Andy L FYI, there were no matrix mixes this early (they didn't start until 1986). David Gans said as much a couple days ago.
08/01/2005 Charlie Miller I believe that the first matrix was 12/15/86.

08/01/2005 neo_levo this isn't a ultramix type of matrix and i am aware of the history of the matrixes (matrices) not happening til '86. Michael asked me to transfer it. From listening to it, there is a sbd component with an audience signal that increases in signal between songs and decreases at the start of music on the DAT.
08/01/2005 Andy L Hey Chris, FYI there is also a copy of this SBD w/ the same thing you're describing that is MSC>Reel>DAT>CDR circulating (part of this seed was used for Scott Clugston's seed, but apparently he replaced the end of Set II w/ a MAC).
08/01/2005 neo_levo hi andy-
i actually compared this to 2 other circulating sources. scott clugston's source is very dry straightup SBD and the FOB to see if this was one of them and it ain't. at first i was skeptical, but the crowd noise seems awfully dialed in at times. anyway, i just transferred this to see how it sounded. i defer all questions regarding the recording source to michael who sent me the DAT.
03/24/2006 MattMan_Video For what's it worth, I have been reviewing all of these sources and this source does indeed _appear_ to contain a soundboard-like component, i.e., the stereo separation, and kicks and hi-hats are sharper and clearer than any of the circulating audience sources. I also like its warmth as compared to shnid=5585.
03/24/2006 Charlie Miller I just listened to this and I can tell you that there is no sbd involved. It sounds like a compressed over-processed copy of the oade's aud...cm
03/26/2006 MattMan_Video Well, its certainly not the oade source, since the two are not in sync with each other. Doesn't the clarity and stereo separation of the keys, for instance, suggest that this is a sbd, or at least contains a sbd?
03/26/2006 Charlie Miller Nope, it could be recorded very close to the stage which is why it would have great stereo imaging. Keep in mind that FOB taping was still OK at this point.
03/27/2006 MattMan_Video Makes sense! On second listen, the other FOB etree sources have very nice stereo imaging as well, although this is still my favorite.
03/27/2006 neo_levo i wouldn't have seeded a 7th source into circulation if i hadn't spent a few hours comparing the others first and thought it sounded better. michael townshend sent me this DAT so he is the person who provided any lineage up to the DAT. he also sent a killer DAT of 2/4/74 JG/MS which i transferred to CD and DVD-A and 10/31/85 which to my listen was not as good as the others that circ'd so I didn't bother seeding. i've transferred/mastered about a a dozen FOBs from '84 in the last month and just in the last day transferred MX-90 chrome masters from FOB Beyer M160s from the night before this show at the same venue and it still sounds to me like this source has sbd in the mix.
03/27/2006 Charlie Miller Honestly, it's hard to tell what's going on with this source. The wave is completely brickwalling and over processed. Look at the wave, there is no wave form to it at all. It just sounds so over processed that even if it was a matrix, it wouldn't be worth listening to, mainly with the killer oade source...just my opinion...cm
03/30/2006 neo_levo the only processing done was Waves L3 and not much at that. There is no peaking or flatlining of the waveform - the settings used wouldn't "allow" it. If you look at it de-maged it will look like its maxed out. most of this is probably related to loss of dynamic range and poor levels from the cassette generation. if you zoom in on the waveform (in the range of seconds) so that a second is say an inch on the screen, variability in waveform is readily apparent. After further listening and comparing to the night before, I have to agree that this is not a sbd/matrix. The lineaged FOB Beyer master sounds even clearer with less crowd noise than this recording.
09/14/2008 nfagdtrfb OK... this source comes from the same rig that made 5304 and 94404 from the night before. We taped both nights in the same spot and set up: Senn 441's > 2 Sony D5's, FOB aprx 25 feet from the stage with the mics angled up and out (thus the nice separartion). This sounds like the deck that was patched out of me, because the flips and pauses are slightly different from my tape. Sadly, this version was transferred way too hot somewhere along the line, and has clipped wav's thru-out. My own MAC has a bit of tape damage that hopefully can be fixed for circulation... Hope that clears things up on this one.
